🌎 ACES Corner | Convergence: Exposure Visit and Coastal Cleanup Drive

Organized by the Religious Studies Department in collaboration with the Ateneo Center for Environment and Sustainability (ACES), students from the SPIECO class participated in an exposure visit at the Salaan Sanitary Landfill and a coastal cleanup drive at the AdZU Lantaka Campus.

Anchored in the spirit of Laudato Si’, these activities became meaningful opportunities for students to engage with environmental realities beyond the classroom β€” from understanding the challenges of waste management to taking direct action in protecting coastal communities and marine ecosystems.

More than an academic immersion, this convergence of learning and service reflected a shared commitment to caring for our common home and advancing sustainable practices within communities. The initiative also supported the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, and SDG 14: Life Below Water.

Through awareness, reflection, and collective action, small efforts created meaningful impact for the environment and future generations.

Through this immersion, students are encouraged to deepen their commitment to caring for our common home and to recognize the collective role we play in building a more sustainable future.

πŸ“£ CALLING ALL SOUTHEAST ASIAN ORGANIZATIONS: Support the call to ASEAN leaders to end the plastic crisis and break free from fossil fuels!

Southeast Asia is facing a growing plastic and waste crisis. Landfill collapses and fires in the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand show that our waste systems can no longer carry the burden of too much plastic, especially single-use plastics.

Plastic is also a fossil fuel problem. More than 99% of plastics are made from fossil fuels, and its production harms people, health, livelihoods, and the climate.

Communities should not pay the price for a crisis created by big, greedy corporations. ASEAN leaders must reduce plastic production, support a just transition to people-centered solutions like reuse, hold plastic polluters accountable, and move Southeast Asia away from fossil fuel dependence.

As ASEAN leaders meet in the Philippines this week, we call on organizations across Southeast Asia to stand with communities and demand action. Support the call πŸ‘‰πŸΎ act.gp/aseanleaders

ZCWD 52ND ANNIVERSARY RIVER CLEAN-UP: PROTECTING OUR SOURCE, PRESERVING OUR FUTURE

April 17, 2026 – As part of the Zamboanga City Water District’s (ZCWD) 52nd anniversary celebration, ZCWD spearheaded a river clean-up activity with the theme, β€œProtecting Our Source, Preserving Our Future: 52 Years of Water Service and Conservation,” along Banuang, Sitio Canacutan, extending to the spillway (the bridge leading to Climaco Park). This initiative aimed to raise public awareness of the importance of maintaining clean waterways and to promote disaster prevention and environmental conservation.

Representing ZCWD Acting General Manager, Louella A. Aguilera, Division Manager of Water Quality Division, Mr. Eric B. Salaritan, stressed that river clean-up prevents flooding by keeping waterways free of waste. Clean rivers improve water flow during heavy rains, benefiting conservation and local development.

A total of 200 participants took part, including ZCWD staff, Task Force Zamboanga, the Philippine Coast Guard, the Philippine Marine Corps, and the Philippine Navy. Academe representatives from Ateneo de Zamboanga University and Universidad de Zamboanga participated, and members of Tau Gamma Philippines supported the private sector.
The Participants from each sector were divided into teams, guided by the ZCWD Environment and Water Resources Department, headed by Engr. Valerie Gay P. Yuayan, assigned to stations along the Banuang, Sitio Canacutan, extending to the spillway (bridge leading to Climaco Park), where they cleared debris accumulated in the riverbed.

The ZCWD expresses appreciation to all organizations for their participation and cooperation. Special thanks go to the Zamboanga City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (ZCDRRMO) for ensuring the safety and well-being of the participants throughout the activity.

πŸšŒπŸ›Ί Kalinga sa Manibela is here!
Our drivers keep this city moving β€” and right now, they need us to show up for them.
With fuel prices continuing to rise, jeepney and tricycle drivers in Zamboanga City are feeling it the most. Many are working harder just to keep up, and for some, it is their families' meals that end up on the line.
In response, Ateneo de Zamboanga University, through the Social Development Unit (SDU) and the Social Awareness and Community Service Involvement (SACSI) Office, launches Kalinga sa Manibela β€” a community outreach program providing immediate food assistance to JODA and TODA drivers in Zamboanga City.
This is our commitment to stand with the people who keep our streets running, even when the road gets harder.
