The essential chemistry books and laboratory apparatus inside will be a massive help to our BS Chemistry students, upgrading their tools for both learning and research.

The WMSU Department of Chemistry (DOC) and the WMSU Research Development and Extension Center (RDEC), with the support of DOST Region IX, successfully conducted the capability training “Applications of Analytical Chemistry in Biological and Food Systems” on August 17, 2026, at the WMSU-CTE Social Hall.

The activity brought together a diverse group of chemistry educators, food technologists, practicing chemists, chemical technicians, and science faculty from universities and colleges and other institutions across the region.

Participating institutions included Ateneo de Zamboanga University (ADZU), Universidad de Zamboanga (UZ), Zamboanga Peninsula Polytechnic State University (ZPPSU), Zamboanga State College of Marine Science and Technology (ZSCMST), and Basilan State College, as well as partner government agencies such as the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), Philippine Coconut Authority–Zamboanga Research Center (PCA-ZRC), and Department of Public Works and Highways Region IX (DPWH IX). Faculty members from WMSU’s Departments of Chemistry, Biology, Physics, and Food Technology likewise took part in the training.

With DOST Balik Scientist Dr. Elmer-Rico E. Mojica as resource speaker, the training explored instrumental analytical techniques, method development, QA/QC and validation, food safety, nutritional analysis, and contaminant monitoring. Two workshops complemented the sessions, focusing on analytical problem-solving and the development of institutional action and research concept proposals.

The strong participation of academe, government agencies, and science professionals underscores the importance of inter-institutional collaboration in advancing analytical chemistry and developing science-based solutions for the region.

Through initiatives such as this, the WMSU Department of Chemistry continues to build partnerships and strengthen professional capabilities toward research, food safety, environmental protection, and regional development.

Faculty members of the WMSU-Department of Chemistry (DOC) participated in the ISLA Water Analysis Training and Island Visit held at Sta. Cruz Island, Zamboanga City, on August 16, 2026, as part of the implementation of the Inclusive Science for Livelihood in Agri-Aqua (ISLA) in Small Islands Program.

The training was spearheaded by the WMSU Research Development and Evaluation Center (RDEC) in collaboration with the WMSU-DOC and the Philippine Association of Chemistry Teachers (PACT)–ZamPen Chapter. DOST Balik Scientist Dr. Elmer-Rico E. Mojica led the hands-on training on the use of water testing kits and portable digital pH and conductivity meters which he subsequently donated to the WMSU-DOC.

The activity also provided an opportunity for all the participants to visit Sta. Cruz Island, one of the extension sites of the WMSU-DOC, and to strengthen the Department’s engagement in science-based initiatives supporting island communities.
