The Department of Economics, University of Buner, successfully organized a one-day seminar on "Causal Inference Analysis in Economics and Social Sciences." The seminar was delivered by Saleem Shah, PhD Candidate in Economics at Clark University, USA.

The seminar provided faculty members and students with valuable insights into modern causal inference methods and their applications in academic research and public policy.

The Vice Chancellor, University of Buner, appreciated the Department of Economics for organizing a seminar on such a relevant and important topic in today's modern research. He also thanked the guest speaker, Saleem Shah, for sharing his expertise and contributing to the University's academic environment.

Our MPhil Scholar, Miss Hafsa Qureshi and faculty members Dr. Muhammad Shahzad and Dr. Imran Ullah has published a research paper titled "Can Higher To***co Taxes Protect Families? Evidence on Household Secondhand Smoke Exposure" in Journal of Business and Tourism.

Abstract
This study tried to quantify the impact of excise duty hike by 150 percent in mini budget of Pakistan in February2023 on the secondhand smoking experience of female. Cross sectional data was collected from a sample of 50 households in district Buner in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa of Pakistan. The study employed descriptive statistics and paired t test analysis for analysis of data. It was found that smoke free air laws are violated not only at the household level but also in shopping centers, public transport and even in educational institutions. The second hand smoke experience was most prevalent while travelling outside homes. Before the tax hike every household’s female experience 5 times ci******es smoke on daily basis, however, after tax hike this number decreased to almost 3.74 and thus it can be inferred that the 2023 tax hike decreased second hand smoke experience by almost 26 percent. The study recommends uniform tax hike for all brands and respect for smoke free air laws both at the household level as well as outsides of homes.
