Dean Dr Salimah R. Walani hosted an exciting and engaging alumni gathering in Dallas, Texas, bringing together alumni from the Class of 1984 to the Class of 2024.

Organized jointly by SONAM and the Alumni Affairs Office, the event gave alumni the opportunity to reconnect, share how they're contributing to the nursing profession, and discuss ways to support SONAM's continued growth and impact.

We are proud to celebrate Kenneth Rintaari, an alumnus of the Aga Khan University School of Nursing and Midwifery, East Africa, on the publication of his book, Beyond the Symptoms.

A paediatric nurse at Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi, Kenneth has turned his professional experiences and personal reflections into a thought-provoking self-help book that looks beyond the challenges we see on the surface of an illness and explores causes for it.

Beyond the Symptoms is a testament to Kenneth’s passion for helping others understand life’s challenges from a deeper perspective.

Congratulations, Kenneth, on this remarkable achievement! Your journey and accomplishments continue to inspire the AKU alumni community and make us proud.

UK AKU Alumni meet AKU Board of Trustees

The energy was palpable at the Aga Khan Centre in London as over 100 AKU alumni in the UK gathered for a special reception with President Dr. Sulaiman Shahabuddin, Chief Advancement Officer Zahra Somani, the AKU’s Board of Trustees and the university’s leadership.

While the President shared exciting updates regarding major developments at the university, alumni spent the evening catching up with old classmates and forging new connections. From reminiscing about university days to tapping along to high-energy music, the event confirmed what we already knew: this is a community that shows up for each other.

AKU Medical College, Pakistan alumni in Australia recently came together for the latest session of Alumni Connect, reconnecting with their alma mater and exploring new ways to contribute to the next generation of AKU students and graduates.

Dean Karim Damji shared updates from the Medical College, including its strategic priorities and plans for the future, and invited alumni to engage through mentorship, student electives and professional knowledge exchange.

The conversation also provided an opportunity to hear from our alumni about their journeys since AKU, the work they are doing today, and their interest in sharing their experience and expertise with the University community.

It was wonderful to see the enthusiasm of our alumni in Australia and their desire to remain connected, contribute and give back to the institution that helped shape their journeys.

Twenty-seven years after graduating from Aga Khan University’s Institute for Educational Development (IED), Karachi, Prof Jane Rarieya has come full circle - from student and alumna to faculty member, academic leader and now Vice Provost of AKU’s Quality, Teaching and Learning Network (QTL-Net) and Interim Dean of IED, East Africa.

Prof Rarieya has contributed to teaching, teacher development, educational leadership, research and faculty development, with a particular focus on strengthening the quality of education across East Africa and beyond.

Her journey has most recently been recognised through her appointment to the International Jury of the UNESCO-Hamdan Prize for Teacher Development, an honour that reflects her long-standing contribution to the teaching profession.

From the classroom to university leadership, Prof Rarieya’s journey is a powerful example of the impact of education and training at AKU.

Dr Felix Nyagaka Named Elite Finalist for 2026 WHS Academic Alliance Best Thesis Prize

We are proud to celebrate Dr Felix Nyagaka, an alumnus of the Aga Khan University Medical College, East Africa, Class of 2025, on being named among the Elite Finalists of the World Health Summit (WHS) Academic Alliance Best Thesis Prize 2026.

Selected as one of the seven finalists from leading institutions around the world, Dr Nyagaka’s recognition highlights the quality and growing global impact of Kenyan research in advancing maternal health.

His research was recognised for its excellence and relevance to global health, reflecting the innovative contributions of emerging researchers addressing pressing health challenges.

Reflecting on the achievement, Dr Nyagaka said: “I am deeply honoured by this recognition. It reinforces the importance of research that addresses real health challenges and inspires me to continue contributing to evidence-based solutions that improve maternal health outcomes in Africa and beyond.”

Dr Nyagaka’s achievement is a testament to the importance of nurturing the next generation of researchers and supporting research that addresses critical health priorities.

We are proud to celebrate our GSMC alumna Mercy Tyra Murengu, Master of Arts in Digital Journalism, Class of 2025, on her remarkable achievements in journalism and media leadership.

Mercy was recently appointed Programme Controller at Radio Maisha, Kenya, while continuing to serve as Director of Journalism and Editorial Strategy at The Africa Feature Network.

Adding to these milestone achievements, she received the Financial and Business Reporting Award at the 14th Annual Media Excellence Awards 2026 and won the Best Re/Insurance Broadcast Entry (English) at the Pan-African Re/Insurance Journalism Awards 2026.
