Khairpur, April 22, 2026 — The Institute of International Relations and Peace Studies (IIRPS), Shah Abdul Latif University (SALU), Khairpur, commemorated Earth Day 2026 empowered by ORIC & QEC of Shah Abdul Latif University Khairpur Mir's with great enthusiasm under the global theme “Our Power, Our Planet.”The event was organized as part of an academic assignment project assigned to BS-III students by Ms Shahar Bano Soomro for the subject _Global Politics of Environment_.
The event commenced with a plantation drive on the IIRPS premises, reflecting a practical commitment to environmental sustainability. This was followed by a poster competition and a speech competition, where students actively demonstrated awareness, creativity, and critical understanding of pressing environmental challenges.

The Vice Chancellor, Meritorious Professor Dr. Yousuf Khushk, graced the occasion through Video Message as the Chief Guest and appreciated the initiative of IIRPS for translating classroom learning into civic action. In his extended address, Dr. Khushk emphasized that _“Earth Day is no longer a symbolic event — it is a reminder of our collective responsibility toward a planet under stress.”_
He noted that Pakistan, despite contributing less than 1% to global carbon emissions, remains among the 10 most climate-vulnerable countries. The devastating floods of 2022, the accelerating sea intrusion in coastal Sindh, and the record-breaking heatwaves are not distant warnings. They are here, and they directly threaten our food security, water availability, and social stability,” he said.
Linking the theme to the mandate of IIRPS, the Vice Chancellor stated: _“For students of International Relations and Peace Studies, environmental degradation is not just an ecological issue — it is a security issue. Climate change is a threat multiplier. It fuels displacement, resource conflicts, and human suffering. There can be no lasting peace on a dying planet.”_

Dr. Khushk lauded the role of academia in shaping *“green diplomacy”* and urged universities to lead research on climate resilience, water diplomacy, and disaster governance. He called upon SALU’s youth to become *“Climate Ambassadors”* and announced that the university will strengthen its *green campus policy* and encourage departments to adopt zero-plastic practices.

He concluded with a call to action [Our power lies in our choices — to plant, to conserve, to educate, and to lead. Our planet’s future depends on the responsibility we take today. IIRPS has shown that path through this meaningful celebration].

During the session, Mr. Sarfaraz Ali Korejo,Director In-Charge, Institute of International Relations and Peace Studies, Shah Abdul Latif University Khairpur commended the students friendly leadership of Shah Abdul Latif University Khairpur- Worthy Vice Chancellor Meritorious Professor Dr Yousif Khushk for excelling such Initiatives through outstanding students of University. Mr Korejo appreciated the students for their active participation and efforts in this unique project under the kind &proud patronage of Dean Faculty of Social Sciences, Professor Dr Liaqat Ali Chandio, respected faculty members. He also highlighted the importance of Earth Day and stressed the environmental challenges that require urgent attention.He pledged to make University green and environment friendly under the dynamic leadership of Dr Khushk and other stakeholders.

The event was graced by distinguished guest speaker Mr. Zubair Ahmed Soomro, a renowned poet, author, and columnist, currently serving as Head of Training and Development at SARSO. In his address, he shed light on the current environmental situation and its far-reaching consequences. He also highlighted the impactful environmental initiatives undertaken by SRSO, stressing the need for collective efforts to address climate challenges.

Among the notable attendees were: Mr. Ishrat Ali Mirani, In-charge Peace and Conflict Studies; Madame Dr Shaista Pathan Focal Person, PM Pakistan ' s Green Pakistan Initiative at Shah Abdul Latif University, Khairpur, Dr. Ahmed Memon; , Dr. Zaheer Hussain Soomro; Dr. Ramzan Kolachi; Mr. Aijaz Ahmed Shaikh; Madam Shahida Raz; Mr. Ali Akbar Abbasi; and Madam Shahar Bano Soomro.
Furthermore, Mr. Ishrat Ali Mirani elaborated on the causes of environmental degradation and its long-term impacts on global stability.
Dr. Ahmed Memon provided an insightful explanation of the Earth’s significance and its vital role in sustaining life.
Dr. Zaheer Hussain Soomro highlighted the importance of observing Earth Day as a means to reinforce environmental awareness.
Mr. Aijaz Ahmed Shaikh discussed the overall environmental situation and stressed the urgency of understanding climate change.
Ms. Shahar Bano Soomro the host of event highlighted the academic significance of assigning Earth Day as a project and emphasized the importance of engaging students in real-world environmental issues to foster responsibility and awareness. In her concluding remarks, she further stressed the need to adopt sustainable practices and environmental ethics, stating that Earth Day should not be limited to a single day of observance but embraced as a continuous responsibility in our daily lives.
Certificates were distributed among the participants of the speech and poster competitions in recognition of their active participation and commendable efforts.
The event was effectively moderated by Mr. Najeeb Larik, ensuring a smooth and engaging flow of activities throughout the program.
The Earth Day celebration at IIRPS served as a meaningful platform to promote environmental consciousness, By organizing events like Earth Day, LSS bridges the gap between classroom learning and real-world environmental responsibility.

A Successful Academic Milestone!

The Institute of International Relations and Peace Studies proudly hosted a highly engaging seminar presented by MS students.

1- Hassan Arshad delivered an insightful presentation on “War vs Terrorism: A Case Study of Pak–US Relations (2001–2008)”, highlighting the complexities of post-9/11 strategic dynamics.
2- Hizbullah presented on “Rise of China as a Global Power: Implications for India in South Asia”, offering a critical analysis of evolving regional power structures.

Both seminars were conducted under the supervision of Mr. Ishrat Ali Mirani, whose guidance played a key role in shaping these scholarly contributions.

The seminar was formally declared successful by Prof. Dr. Liaquat Ali Chandio, Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences.

Quiz Competition on “War: A Contemporary reality in the Middle East”

The Leaders Students Society (LSS) of the Institute of International Relations and Peace Studies, Shah Abdul Latif University, Khairpur, organized a Quiz Competition on Tuesday, 14 April 2026, at the Department of International Relations.

The competition was conducted over a duration of one hour and witnessed active participation from students enrolled in BS-I to BS-IV programs. The event aimed to promote academic engagement and enhance students’ understanding of contemporary international issues.

The theme of the quiz, “War: A Contemporary reality in the Middle East,” was carefully selected to encourage critical thinking and awareness regarding ongoing geopolitical dynamics in the region. Participants demonstrated commendable knowledge, analytical skills, and enthusiasm throughout the competition.

The proceedings were carried out in a well-organized, disciplined, and peaceful manner, reflecting the academic standards and collaborative spirit of the department. Participants adhered to all guidelines and instructions as outlined in the official notification, ensuring the smooth conduct of the event.

The quiz was invigilated by Madam Shahar Bano Soomro, along with Hafsa Agha, President of LSS, and Ayaz Ali, General Secretary of LSS, who collectively supervised and facilitated the competition with diligence and professionalism.

The 65th Study Circle was successfully organized by the Leaders Student Society (LSS) under the dynamic supervision of its first-ever female President Hafsa Agha . Which was presided by Mr Ishrat Ali Meerani , Mr Aijaz Ahmed Shaikh, Madam shahar bano Sommro

Where Madam Shahar Bano Soomro spoke on the topic “Regional Diplomacy and Pakistan’s Role in the US–Iran Conflict,” highlighting Pakistan’s proactive role in regional peacebuilding. She emphasized that Pakistan is practicing tightrope diplomacy by balancing its relations with both the United States and Iran while safeguarding its national interests.
She noted that Pakistan is also shaping a strategic narrative as a responsible and peace-oriented regional actor through diplomatic engagement and conflict de-escalation. She further observed that this role entails certain challenges, including external pressures and the difficulty of maintaining neutrality.
She concluded that such a balanced approach strengthens Pakistan’s global image and contributes to regional stability.Sir Ishrat Ali Mirani spoke primarily on the US–Iran conflict, presenting its historical background and analyzing its current developments in detail. He highlighted the major causes, including longstanding political tensions, the nuclear issue, economic sanctions, and strategic rivalries, and examined their far-reaching global consequences.

He further noted that the conflict continues to impact regional stability, global security, and international economic dynamics, particularly in relation to energy markets. Emphasizing a peaceful approach, he stated that war is not a viable solution and stressed the importance of dialogue and diplomacy.

Linking his discussion to the broader theme, he underscored the need for effective conflict management and diplomatic engagement to prevent escalation and ensure sustainable peace.Sir Aijaz Ahmed Shaikh highlighted the broader global implications of the US–Iran conflict, particularly its impact on the international framework. He emphasized how the conflict has affected global economic markets, especially energy prices and trade dynamics, thereby influencing economies worldwide.

He further noted that the ceasefire efforts were widely appreciated at the international level, with Pakistan receiving recognition for its constructive diplomatic role. He underscored that such developments reflect Pakistan’s growing significance in promoting regional stability and contributing to global peace.

Khairpur: The Institute of International Relations and Peace Studies at Shah Abdul Latif University, Khairpur, successfully inaugurated a two-day international seminar on the theme “Pakistan’s Strategic Role: Navigating the Regional Geopolitics Amidst Zionist and Hindutva Ambitions.”
The inaugural session was graced by Dr. Yousuf Khushk, Vice Chancellor, Shah Abdul Latif University Khairpur; Syed Fakhar Imam, Former Federal Minister of Pakistan; Dr. Masuma Hasan, Chairman PIIA; Qazi M. Khalilullah, Ambassador (R) and Executive Director CISS; Ata ul Munim Shahid, Former Ambassador of Pakistan to Algeria; Liaquat Ali Chandio, Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences; Col (Rtd) Aamir Hayat, Principal Cadet College Khairpur; Shafqat Rasool, President IIRIS; Sarfraz Ali Korejo, Incharge Director, Institute of International Relations and Peace Studies; Safa Rehmat, Director, Pak Scholars & Skills Development Centre; Hassan Zafar; Dr. Hassnain Javed; Dr. Hassan Raza Naqvi; Nasir Abbas; Dr. Abdul Wodood; Dr. Dost Muhammad; and Abdul Qadir.

In his welcome address, Mr. Sarfraz Ali Korejo emphasized the importance of academic dialogue in understanding contemporary geopolitical challenges and underscored the role of research institutions in shaping informed policy perspectives.
The seminar featured insightful deliberations by distinguished speakers who addressed various dimensions of the theme. Dr. Yousuf Khushk, Vice Chancellor, highlighted the importance of academic engagement in addressing complex geopolitical realities and emphasized the role of universities in fostering critical thinking and policy-oriented research.. Ata ul Munim Shahid highlighted the evolving regional dynamics and emphasized the increasing role of non-state actors in shaping contemporary security environments. Ambassador Qazi M. Khalilullah presented a comprehensive analysis of the historical evolution of the regional situation and patterns of alliance formation.
Dr. Masuma Hasan offered a broad perspective on the overall geopolitical environment, while Syed Fakhar Imam reflected on the historical challenges faced by Pakistan and their continued relevance in present times.
Safa Rehmat delivered an in-depth discussion on ideological constructs, particularly Zionism and Hindutva, and their implications for global and regional politics. Hassan Zafar elaborated on the historical development and evolution of these ideologies and highlighted Pakistan’s role in this changing strategic landscape.
Dr. Hassnain Javed examined Pakistan’s contemporary strategic environment, focusing on its relations with India and China, while also presenting the Chinese perspective. Dr. Hassan Raza Naqvi analyzed the issue through the lens of international law, highlighting violations, the “Greater Israel” concept, the Hindutva perspective, and Pakistan’s strategic positioning in the emerging world order.
Nasir Abbas discussed the nature of the current global order and its connection with regional dynamics, along with a comparative analysis of Zionism and Hindutva and Pakistan’s role within this framework.
Dr. Abdul Wodood emphasized the academic and strategic importance of the seminar’s theme, underlining its relevance in contemporary international discourse. Dr. Dost Muhammad highlighted the role of Balochistan in the broader geopolitical context and discussed Pakistan’s overall strategic situation in relation to regional developments.
Abdul Qadir contributed a military perspective, highlighting the strategic and defense dimensions of Pakistan’s role in the evolving regional security environment and Irans's defense system.
The seminar aims to provide a platform for critical engagement on regional dynamics, strategic competition, and emerging security challenges, particularly in the context of South Asia and the broader international system.
The inaugural session concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Mr. Ali Akbar Abbasi with the renewed commitment to promoting academic excellence and fostering meaningful dialogue on issues of national and global significance.

The Leaders Students Society (LSS) of the Institute of International Relations and Peace Studies, Shah Abdul Latif University Khairpur, successfully organized the Oath-Taking Ceremony of its newly elected cabinet.
The ceremony marked the formal induction of the new leadership, including President Hafsa Agha, General Secretary Ayaz Ali, Information Secretary Muhammad Najeeb, and Treasurer Najaf Ali.
The event commenced with the recitation of the Holy Qur’an, followed by an address by Prof. Ishrat Ali Mirani, pioneer and Incharge of the Leaders Students Society and Incharge of Peace and Conflict Studies. In his speech, he reflected on the establishment of the Leaders Students Society in 2021 and highlighted its remarkable achievements. He noted that since its inception, LSS has organized more than 65 study circles, over six debates, six Scholar Extension Series, several quiz competitions, and various socio-academic activities aimed at promoting intellectual growth and leadership among students. He further emphasized that LSS is the first-ever departmental students’ society of Shah Abdul Latif University, Khairpur, playing a vital role in nurturing academic engagement and student participation.
Following the address, the newly elected cabinet formally took the oath, committing themselves to serve the society and the student community with dedication and responsibility.
In her inaugural address, President Hafsa Agha expressed gratitude to the faculty, students, and members of the society for their trust and support. She outlined her manifesto and key initiatives for the year 2026, emphasizing the introduction of a Skill Development Initiative aimed at enhancing students’ professional and academic capacities. She also announced the Annual Progressive Awards, which will recognize students for their active participation and contributions to the activities of LSS. Furthermore, she revealed that the society is working towards the introduction of a formal Constitution, which will institutionalize its structure and ensure its sustainability in the future.
Among the distinguished faculty members present on the occasion were Prof. Ishrat Ali Mirani (Incharge Peace and Conflict Studies), Dr. Zaheer Hussain Soomro, Mr. Aijaz Ahmed Shaikh, and Ms. Shahar Bano Soomro. Alumni of the Leaders Students Society were also present, including Rashid Rahmat, Mulazim Hussain, Sarmad Murtaza, Treesa Turab, Saba Kalwar, and Atiya Wassan, reflecting their continued connection with the society and its academic initiatives.
Addressing the gathering, the faculty members congratulated the newly elected cabinet and expressed their confidence in the leadership abilities of the new team.
Dr. Zaheer Hussain Soomro appreciated the efforts of the Leaders Students Society in promoting an intellectually vibrant environment within the Institute and encouraged the newly elected leadership to remain committed to academic excellence.
Mr. Aijaz Ahmed Shaikh also congratulated the new cabinet and emphasized the importance of teamwork, discipline, and dedication in student leadership. He expressed hope that the new leadership would further strengthen the society’s role in fostering dialogue, critical thinking, and constructive academic engagement.
Ms. Shahar Bano Soomro highlighted the significance of the Leaders Students Society as an important platform for intellectual growth and student participation. She also shared the main objective of LSS, emphasizing the principle of collective wisdom, through which students collaborate, exchange ideas, and contribute to a vibrant academic environment.
The ceremony concluded with a group photograph, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the Leaders Students Society and reaffirming its commitment to fostering academic excellence, leadership, and collaborative learning within the Institute.
