📚 Day 8 | Short Course: Mathematical Analysis and Its Modern Applications

The eighth and final day of the short course marked the conclusion of an intellectually enriching series of lectures on “Mathematical Analysis and Its Modern Applications,” delivered by Dr. Ali Raza

The final sessions focused on the mathematical foundations of Artificial Intelligence and explored the important role of function spaces in AI. The discussions highlighted the strong and meaningful connection between mathematical analysis and modern Artificial Intelligence, particularly how concepts from analysis provide a rigorous mathematical framework for understanding and developing AI models.

The day concluded with an overall discussion of the course objectives, reflecting on the goals set at the beginning and how they were achieved throughout the course. An overview of the journey from the first lecture to the final session was also presented, allowing participants to revisit the major concepts and ideas covered during the course.

🎓 The course concluded with the presentation of certificates to participants who fulfilled the required criteria and secured more than 70% marks in the course assessment.

Dr. Ali Raza sincerely thanks all the participants who joined the course from different parts of the country for their enthusiasm, dedication, and active participation throughout the lectures. Their engagement and interest made this learning experience truly meaningful.

We look forward to organizing more such academic and intellectually enriching activities in the future.

ASSMS UPDATE | 44th BOARD OF STUDIES MEETING

The 44th Meeting of the Board of Studies (BOS) of the Abdus Salam School of Mathematical Sciences (ASSMS), Government College University Lahore, was held today, 13 August 2026, commencing at 11:00 a.m. and concluding at 4:30 p.m.

The meeting was convened by Prof. Dr. Khurram Shabbir. Extensive academic deliberations were held on the School’s ongoing and newly proposed academic and research initiatives.

A major milestone of the meeting was the approval in principle of the ASSMS–LUMS–International Mathematics Master (IMM) Collaborative Academic Programme – Pilot Cohort 2026, aimed at providing selected students from the newly inducted ASSMS batch with access to advanced mathematical training through coordinated academic engagement among ASSMS, LUMS and IMM.

Prof. Peter Stevenhagen, President of the International Mathematics Master and Leiden University, Netherlands, joined the meeting online and contributed to the detailed deliberations on the proposed international academic programme.

The meeting was attended by Prof. Dr. Saifullah, Prof. Dr. Ghazala Akram, Prof. Dr. Shabnam Malik, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Hussain and Dr. Imran Anwar, along with Dr. Shaheen Nazir, Chair, Department of Mathematics, LUMS, as Special Invitee. Prof. Peter Stevenhagen also participated as Special Invitee through online mode.

During the extended session, the Board held detailed discussions on the initiatives undertaken by ASSMS and approved/recommended, as applicable, several important academic and research measures, including:

ASSMS–LUMS–IMM Collaborative Academic Programme – Pilot Cohort 2026

Six Thematic Schools annually in advanced and emerging areas of mathematical sciences

Revival of Math Track and establishment of an Independent MPhil Research Review Mechanism

ASSMS National Research Seed Grant for Universities (ASSMS-NRSGU)

ASSMS National Mathematics Olympiad and Talent Development Programme for university, college and school students

Introduction of new advanced courses and revision of existing courses

Approval of MPhil research synopses and panels of examiners

Deliberations on the academic progress, research and support framework for scholars

The meeting marked an important milestone in strengthening the national and international academic profile of ASSMS, with particular emphasis on advanced mathematical training, international collaboration, research quality, talent development and academic outreach.

📚 Day 7 | Short Course: Mathematical Analysis and Its Modern Applications

Continuing from yesterday’s lecture, we concluded our discussion with the existence of solutions to Fredholm integral equations. The session then moved towards the fascinating intersection of mathematics and Artificial Intelligence, where we explored the mathematical concepts underlying AI, followed by the mathematical foundations of deep neural networks and how they are trained through optimization techniques such as gradient descent and backpropagation.

We look forward to continuing this journey of learning, exploration, and mathematical discovery in the days ahead. ✨
