Inauguration of Biorisk Management Workshop 2026 (Phase-I) | Strengthening Biosafety, Biosecurity & Health Security

The Biorisk Management Workshop 2026 (Phase-I) has officially commenced at the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (IMBB), The University of Lahore, and will continue from 14–18 September 2026.

The five-day specialized workshop brings together experts and students for expert-led sessions, practical demonstrations, interactive learning, and knowledge exchange focused on Biosafety, Biosecurity, Biorisk Assessment, Risk Mitigation, and Health Security.

18–20 students are participating in the workshop, gaining practical exposure and strengthening their understanding of safe, secure, and responsible practices in biological sciences.

Special Appreciation to the Trainers:
IMBB extends its sincere appreciation to Dr. Muhammad Tayyeb, BRM Program Manager, and Dr. Amriz Khan, Program Coordinator ABM, for their expertise, commitment, and valuable contribution to delivering this specialized training.

Project Presentations: 3D Models of Mineral Resources in Pakistan
The Department of Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Sciences (FOS) at The University of Lahore (UOL) hosted project presentations for the course Mineral Resources at the Analytical Lab. Supervised by Dr. Momina Anwar, Lecturer, the activity involved 5 teams comprising 20 participants, with each group selecting a province of Pakistan to create a 3D model showcasing its mineral resources. The purpose was to help students understand the locations, abundance, and distribution of minerals in a creative and memorable way while encouraging teamwork, research, and presentation skills.

Faculty of Sciences (FOS) organized a journal club meeting (JCM) on 4th September 2026. The purpose of this meeting was to bring faculty members and postgraduate students together to review, critique, and discuss the already published original research. Dr. Faiza Hassan (Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry) presented a research article on the topic *Bimetallic Zn/Ag nanoparticles for the enhanced antimicrobial efficacy*. She took the audience on a deep dive into the subject matter. During her critical appraisal, she turned the spotlight onto what wasn't in the paper: long-term stability data and leaching tests. While the antimicrobial study was conducted quite impressively, real-world application relies heavily on how stable these nanoparticles remain over time.
At the end, Prof. Dr. Ahmed Bilal Waqar, Dean FOS, concluded the session with an appraisal for Dr. Faiza Hassan. He also highlighted the importance of JCMs which serves as an ultimate bridge in academia and acting as a collaborative intersection where researchers and ideas connect. This is how the boundaries of research can be pushed.
