'Farhang e Sinfi Mutaleyat' by Dr Ambreen Salahuddin is a companion of gender studies in Urdu published by Urdu Science Board. The discipline of gender studies is comparatively new to our region and not much work is done in Urdu on terminologies of gender, gender studies and feminism. Many terms are ambiguous and unfamiliar for the local readers. So, in compilation of this book, the prime focus is to make readers acquainted with important terms and turning points in the history of women emancipation movements. The book has five sections. First section contains relevant articles from constitution of Pakistan, women related legislation and brief introduction to governmental institutions for gender parity and women rights. Second section includes universal declarations, conventions and conferences. Third section brings an introduction to international and national organizations working for human rights and women rights. Fourth section contains terminology related to gender studies and feminism. Fifth section gives introduction to notable names of feminist and human rights movements comprising of three separate sections on global, South Asian and Pakistani thinkers, feminists and empowered women. Another feature that makes this book a reliable resource is that it includes citations and references from credible research in proper APA format. There is a proper exhaustive bibliography at the end. A very important element is the fact that this book contains brief introduction to the feminist theorists and to other notable names in women’s movement. There is list of important publication of each author in the book as well, which can guide researchers and students of gender studies towards the accurate texts.
There is a dearth of material in our National language about Gender Studies. This resource is a big help for students who want clarity about concepts in Urdu, because of the barrier of language.
The book is published by Urdu Science Board and can be ordered online.
