PhD Scholar Successfully Defends Research on Maternal Health Challenges in Gilgit-Baltistan

The Department of Sociology proudly announces the successful PhD defense of Mr. Shabbir Hussain, who completed his doctoral research under the supervision of Dr. Hussain Ali, Assistant Professor of Sociology.

Mr. Hussain’s PhD research, titled ā€œSocio-Cultural Constraints to Women in Accessing Maternal Health Care Services in Gilgit-Baltistan,ā€ provides an in-depth analysis of the multiple barriers faced by women in remote and underserved regions. The core objective of the study was to investigate the social, cultural, economic, and geographical constraints that hinder women’s access to essential maternal health care services.

The research makes a significant contribution to understanding the vulnerabilities of women in Gilgit-Baltistan—an area that has largely remained underrepresented in national-level surveys such as the Pakistan Demographic and Health Survey conducted by the National Institute of Population Studies (NIPS). Highlighting the policy relevance of his work, Mr. Hussain shared that a comprehensive policy draft has been developed and will be submitted to the Directorate General of Health, Gilgit-Baltistan, aiming to integrate the study’s recommendations into maternal and child health care programs in the region.

The external examiners for the defense were Dr. Bushra Hassan Jan from the Department of Sociology, The University of Agriculture, Peshawar, and Dr. Qaiser Khalid Mehmood from the Department of Gender Studies, University of the Punjab, Lahore. Dr. Aisha Jalil from NUST, Islamabad, served as the co-supervisor.

On this occasion, Dr. Ahmad Ali, Chairperson of the Department of Sociology, warmly welcomed the external examiners and appreciated the scholarly contribution of Mr. Shabbir Hussain. Faculty members and students actively engaged in the session, posing insightful questions that were addressed comprehensively by the scholar.

The examiners and the Chairperson commended the quality and relevance of the research, as well as the dedicated supervision provided by Dr. Hussain Ali. It was also noted with pride that Dr. Hussain Ali has successfully supervised three PhD scholars as a principal supervisor, reflecting his strong academic mentorship and commitment to research excellence.

The Department of Sociology congratulates Mr. Shabbir Hussain on this remarkable academic achievement and wishes him continued success in his future endeavors.
