Five men in Chhattisgarh, India, were given death sentences in January 2021 for the gang r*pe and killing of a teenage girl, along with the murders of her father and three-year-old niece.
After being promised motorbike transportation, the victims—who belonged to a marginalized ethnic community—were ambushed. In an attempt to prevent the r*pe, the father was assassinated, and the niece was also killed. Days after being discovered comatose, the girl passed away on the way to the hospital.
A sixth individual who participated in the murders was sentenced to life in prison. In 2022, India recorded around 90 r*pes every day, although many more go unreported, underscoring the pervasiveness of gender-based violence in the country.
