Archaeology, Tourism & Hospitality, University of Peshawar Welcome to the Department of Archaeology, Tourism & Hotel Management, University of Peshawar The Department of Archaeology was established in 1960.

Apart from regular B.A (Hons) , M.Phil and Ph.D. degree programs, the Department is engaged in extensive and intensive field oriented research throughout the province. This research has added new chapters to our cultural history. One of the greatest achievements of the Department has been the construction of a beautiful museum, which houses a huge collection of antiquities excavated by the staff a

nd students since its inception. The Department publishes a research bulletin, Ancient Pakistan, that includes research articles and excavation reports.

Obituary
The Faculty, Staff and Students of the Department of Archaeology express deep sorrow at the passing of Professor Katsumi Tanabe, a distinguished scholar of Gandhāran art and archaeology, who passed away on Sunday, 19 April 2026. Professor Tanabe was a Japanese international scholar who pursued his Maters studies at the Department of Archaeology, University of Peshawar in the 1960s, where he graduated as a gold medalist. He maintained a lifelong association with the department and his pioneering scholarship on the Buddhist art of Gandhāra and Kushan iconography earned him global recognition. His passing is not only a loss to his academic family but a mutual and irreparable loss to the fraternity of archaeology across the world.
We extend our deepest condolences to his family, students, and colleagues.

The *Department of Archaeology, Tourism and Hotel Management UoP* in the Collaboration with *Directorate General of Archaeology & Museums KP* brings you *Night Steps Through History: Discovering Peshawar After Dark - Chapter 4*, a journey through Peshawar’s soul, its stories and its timeless heritage.

Department of Archaeology:

Mr. Habibullah Khattak successfully defended his PhD dissertation today in the field of Archaeology. Mr. Khattak completed his research under the supervision of Dr. Zakirullah Jan, Chairman Department of Archaeology
with co-supervision by Dr. Luca Maria Oliveri.

His dissertation, titled “Evidence of Amaravati and Mathura School of Art on Gandhara,” makes a significant scholarly contribution to the understanding of cultural and artistic interactions in ancient South Asia.

The panel of examiners comprised Prof. Dr. Muhammad Naeem Qazi, Pro-Vice Chancellor, University of Peshawar, and Dr. Muhammad Hameed from the University of the Punjab.

The examiners appreciated the depth, originality, and academic rigor of the research work.

The public defense was attended by faculty members, scholars, and students from the disciplines of Archaeology and tourism, reflecting strong academic engagement and interest in the subject.

The Department congratulates Mr. Habibullah Khattak on this remarkable achievement and wishes him continued success in his academic and professional pursuits.
