The Launch Ceremony of the Institute of Integrative Bioscience that included a panel discussion on the future of life sciences in KPK was held at CECOS University on the 27th of September 2014. Professor M Qasim Jan, Advisor, COMSTECH and Professor Emeritus, University of Peshawar was the chief guest on the occasion.
The event started off with a welcome address by the Vice Chancellor CECOS University, Professor Riaz Khattak.
The newly appointed Director of the Institute and Assistant Professor of Cell and Systems Biology, Dr Faisal F. Khan, opened up the panel with a talk on current trends in life sciences education and research and laying out the vision and values that drives IIB at CECOS.
Dr Faisal Khan moderated the panel discussion which had top cross-disciplinarians and innovators in KP - Professor Yaseen Iqbal, an eminent physicist and Chairman of the Department of Physics and Electronics (University of Peshawar), Professor Mukhtar Ullah (Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering at FAST, Islamabad), Dr Zahid Khan (Assistant Professor of Biochemistry, University of Peshawar) and Baseer Qazi (Assistant Professor of Innovation at MAJU Islamabad).
The discussion sparked an interesting series of questions when it was opened up to the audience, which included leading stakeholders including government officials, vice chancellors of universities, deans and heads of departments, faculty members and students. There was also some representation from top schools and startups in Peshawar.
Other prominent guests including Professor Zahoor Swati (Vice Chancellor, Agriculture University, Peshawar), Professor Lutfullah Kakakhel (ex-Vice Chancellor, Kohat University), Dr Muhammad Ali (Deputy Director, IMSciences), Professor Subhan Qureshi (Dean, Agriculture University Peshawar), Professor Safdar Hussain Shah (Director, Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering, Pesahwar), Mr Nasir Ali Shah (Director, HEC Regional Office Peshawar), Professor Ghosia Lutfullah (Director, Centre of Biotechnology and Microbiology, Peshawar) and Professor Muhammad Abid (Director, Interdisciplinary research centre, COMSATS).
