🌱 SAU, FACE Agree to Collaborate on Agricultural Innovation & Student Ventures

Sindh Agriculture University (SAU), Tandojam and the Food Security and Agriculture Centre of Excellence (FACE) have agreed to collaborate on student-led commercial projects, women’s vermicomposting training and the Agriculture and Food Security Innovation Challenge (AFSIC-2026).

FACE will provide financial support for selected student innovation projects, with two commercially promising proposals to be selected from five shortlisted projects.

The collaboration will focus on key areas including climate-smart agriculture, food security, efficient water management, agricultural mechanization, data-driven farming, post-harvest technologies, food-loss prevention, value addition, soil-health restoration and sustainable agriculture.

FACE representative Muhammad Ahmed held discussions with SAU Vice Chancellor Engr. Prof. Dr Altaf Ali Siyal, in the presence of Registrar Ghulam Mohiuddin Qureshi and ORIC Advisor/Director Dr Aasia Akber Panhwar.

The two sides also discussed a women-focused initiative under which SAU experts, with FACE support, will train local women in vermicomposting, creating potential income-generating opportunities.

Dr Altaf Ali Siyal welcomed the collaboration and emphasized stronger partnerships among universities, industry and institutions to transform research and innovation into practical, scalable and commercially viable solutions for Pakistan’s agriculture sector.

The initiative marks another step toward strengthening agricultural innovation, entrepreneurship, research and community-based development through university–industry collaboration.

SAU, WMR Explore Collaboration to Develop Banana Fiber Technology

TANDOJAM: Sindh Agriculture University Tandojam and Worldwide Manpower Resources (WMR) have explored collaboration in banana fiber technology, focusing on converting agricultural waste into value-added products, creating employment opportunities and promoting sustainable agriculture in Sindh.

WMR CEO and former NADRA Director General Ehtasham Shahid visited SAU’s Banana Fiber Extraction Unit and the Institute of Food Sciences and Technology, where he was briefed on the university’s research, fiber extraction and product development activities.

The visit was coordinated by Dr Aasia Akbar Panhwar, Adviser/Director ORIC. Discussions with Dean Faculty of Crop Production Dr Inayatullah Rajper and Dr Shokat Ali Abro focused on developing pilot projects in banana fiber technology with potential support from foreign investment.

Dr Rajper said banana plants and their residues could provide an important source of industrial raw material beyond fruit production, while banana fiber technology could turn agricultural waste into an economically valuable resource and create opportunities for farmers, industry and local communities.

Mr Shahid appreciated SAU’s research and practical work and highlighted the potential of banana fiber for local and international markets. He stressed stronger linkages among universities, research institutions, the private sector and investors to transform research-based technologies into commercially viable projects.

Dr Aasia Panhwar said ORIC was facilitating university-industry linkages and promoting the commercialization of research. She added that collaboration in banana fiber technology could support sustainable agriculture, agricultural waste utilization, livelihood opportunities, women’s economic inclusion and climate-resilient technologies.

The proposed collaboration aims to explore investment opportunities and pilot projects for establishing a banana fiber value chain, benefiting farmers, industry and local communities while reducing agricultural waste.

37 Probationary Officers of 53rd CTP Visit Sindh Agriculture University

TANDOJAM: A delegation of 37 BS-17 probationary officers of the 53rd Common Training Program (CTP) visited Sindh Agriculture University Tandojam as part of their study tour of Sindh.

Welcoming the delegation, Vice Chancellor Engr. Prof. Dr. Altaf Ali Siyal said SAU was entering its 50th year and had made significant contributions to agricultural education, research and human resource development in Pakistan.

Dr Siyal highlighted the importance of modern technologies, innovation and research for enhancing agricultural productivity and ensuring food security. He also urged the probationary officers to play an active role in strengthening public institutions and serving the country as they assume important government responsibilities.

Dr Abdul Mubeen Lodhi, Dean Faculty of Crop Protection and Adviser, Directorate of Advanced Studies, gave a detailed presentation on SAU’s academic programmes, research activities, infrastructure and institutional initiatives.

The delegation also visited the Horticulture Garden, Sports Complex, Malir Model Farm, research laboratories and various academic and administrative departments of the university.

The visiting officers appreciated SAU’s academic environment, infrastructure and contributions to agricultural education, research and national development.

SAU VC stresses research–industry linkages for a sustainable sugar sector

TANDOJAM: Vice Chancellor Sindh Agriculture University Tandojam, Engr. Prof. Dr. Altaf Ali Siyal, has stressed stronger collaboration among universities, research institutions, sugarcane growers and the sugar industry to enhance productivity, improve resource-use efficiency and ensure the long-term sustainability of Pakistan’s sugar sector.

Addressing the second-day session of the 58th Annual Convention of the Pakistan Society of Sugar Technologists (PSST) in Karachi, Dr Siyal said research should focus on real challenges faced by farmers and the sugar industry, including water availability, production costs, climate variability, pests and diseases, varietal performance and efficient use of agricultural inputs.

He emphasized that joint research, field trials, technology demonstrations, precision agriculture, remote sensing and improved irrigation practices can help translate scientific knowledge into practical solutions for farmers and industry.

“The laboratory, farmer’s field and sugar mill should not operate in isolation. The real value of research lies in its practical application,” Dr Siyal said.

The session was attended by leading sugar technologists, researchers, growers, agriculturists and representatives of the sugar industry, including Shiffat Zaidi, Hyder Bux Rustamani, Dr Muhammad Chohan of PARC Thatta and other experts.

At the conclusion, a commemorative shield was presented to Dr Altaf Ali Siyal in recognition of his participation and contribution to the convention.
