Wrocław Tech Fragrance Lab at ISEO 2026 in Grasse! 🌿🔬

We are proud to share the highlights of our team’s participation in the ISEO - International Symposium on Essential Oils

This year’s symposium was a particularly important event for Wrocław Tech Fragrance Lab, with our team contributing to the scientific programme as speakers, poster presenters, Young Scientists Fellows and members of the Scientific Committee.

🎤 Dr Daniel J. Strub delivered an invited lecture entitled “Mechanisms of Protection Against Genotoxicity: Deconstructing Matrix-Derived Combination Effects of Alkenylbenzenes”. The presentation focused on how the complex matrix of essential oils may influence the genotoxic and mutagenic effects of naturally occurring constituents.

As one of the panelists of the IFEAT and EFEO
panel entitled: From Natural Complexity to Regulatory Confidence: Challenges in the Safety Assessment of Essential oils

Daniel also served as a session chair, contributing to the scientific discussions and programme of the symposium.

🧪 Dr Eng. Lucyna Balcerzak presented poster:

“Antimicrobial activity and mutagenic effect of natural raw materials derived from Calendula officinalis L.”

🧬 Dr Eng. Alicja Surowiak presented poster:

"Cytotoxicity assessment of Calendula
officinalis essential oil and related lipophilic natural
complex substances"

🌱 We are especially proud of our PhD students Zuzanna Bacińska and Kinga Baberowska, who attended ISEO 2026 as recipients of the Young Scientists IFEAT Fellowship and presented their research in the poster sessions.

Kinga presented “Skin-targeted biological profile of Pluchea grevei essential oil: antimicrobial, antioxidant and toxicity evaluation”, exploring the chemical and biological properties of Pluchea grevei essential oil, including its antimicrobial activity, antioxidant capacity and safety profile.

Zuzanna presented her work on “Natural fragrance materials as modulators of cell viability and gingipain activity: cytotoxic and enzymatic insights”, investigating the biological effects of selected natural fragrance materials at both cellular and enzymatic levels.

🏆 And there is even more to celebrate — Kinga Baberowska received the award for Best Poster Presentation! A fantastic achievement and a great recognition of her research and scientific communication.

🤝 Our team also contributed to the symposium at the scientific level, with Dr Daniel J. Strub and Dr Alicja K. Surowiak serving as members of the ISEO Scientific Committee.

For us, ISEO 2026 was much more than an opportunity to present our latest results. It was a chance to exchange ideas with researchers from around the world, discuss emerging challenges in essential oil and fragrance science, and strengthen international collaborations.

We are grateful to the ISEO organisers and IFEAT for creating such an inspiring scientific environment and for supporting the next generation of researchers through the Young Scientists Fellowship.

Two members of Wrocław Tech Fragrance Lab, Lucyna Balcerzak and Alicja Surowiak, recently completed a research internship at the laboratory of Prof. Maciej Wnuk at the Institute of Biotechnology at the University of Rzeszów 🔬🧬. During their stay, they had the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in advanced genotoxicity assessment of natural complex substances and expand their expertise in modern in vitro testing approaches.

The internship focused on screening studies using the InCell platform, including the evaluation of micronucleus formation, investigation of DNA damage repair mechanisms, and practical aspects of the OECD Test Guideline 487 (In Vitro Mammalian Cell Micronucleus Test) 🧪📊.

This valuable experience will support our ongoing research on the safety and biological activity of natural ingredients used in fragrance and cosmetic applications 🌿✨.

We would like to sincerely thank Prof. Maciej Wnuk and the entire research team for their warm welcome, willingness to share their knowledge, and the excellent scientific atmosphere throughout the internship 🤝💙. We are grateful for the opportunity to learn from such an experienced group and look forward to future collaborations.

We are proud to share that members of Wrocław Tech Fragrance Lab actively participated in BioActive 2026 🌱🔬

Dr. Alicja Surowiak delivered an oral presentation entitled “Pluchea grevei Essential Oil as a Multifunctional Active Ingredient” 🎤✨, highlighting the potential of natural ingredients in innovative cosmetic and fragrance applications.

Our PhD student Kinga Baberowska presented a poster entitled “Structural Modification of Fragrance Alcohols: Effects on Human Cell Viability” 📊🧪, showcasing research at the intersection of fragrance chemistry and safety assessment.

The conference provided an excellent opportunity to exchange knowledge, discuss current research trends, and connect with scientists working on bioactive compounds from across academia and industry 🌍🤝

We are delighted to see our team contributing to international scientific discussions and representing Wrocław Tech Fragrance Lab on the BioActive stage 🚀

From May 11–15, our PhD students Kinga Baberowska and Zuzanna Bacińska had the pleasure of participating for the second time in the Unite! Research School 2026 (URS! 2026 PoliTO), organized by Politecnico di Torino at the beautiful Santuario di Oropa near Biella and Turin, Italy 🇮🇹✨

The event brought together students and researchers from the universities of the, creating a unique international environment for scientific exchange, interdisciplinary collaboration, and networking 🌍🤝

During the programme, our PhD students developed their knowledge and practical skills in the field of Enabling Technologies, with particular focus on Space Technologies and Biological Engineering 🚀🧬 Through lectures, workshops, and teamwork with participants from across Europe, they gained valuable experience, broadened their research perspectives, and built meaningful international connections.

Participating in URS! 2026 once again was not only an opportunity for academic and professional growth, but also a chance to strengthen international cooperation and foster future research collaborations within the Unite! community 💡🔬

Last week, had the pleasure of welcoming the winners of the “Cosmetic Workshops for Two”charity auction, which we donated to support the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity ❤️🎶 WOŚP

Just a few hours in the lab were enough to go from formulation to finished products ✨ Under the guidance of Alicja Surowiak, the participants created their own **body balm, shower gel, and Florentine wax tabs** 🌸🫧🕯️

It was wonderful to see so much curiosity, creativity, and joy while discovering the world of cosmetic chemistry 💕🔬💄

We are very happy that we could combine our passion for fragrance products, cosmetics and science with supporting such an important initiative ❤️👏

We’re happy to share that Eryk Kurowski, a member of Wrocław Tech Fragrance Lab, participated in the COMEF Academy training on Raman microscopy held in Kraków 🎓🔬

The training, organized in collaboration with AGH University of Krakow and HORIBA, combined both theoretical and practical sessions focused on Raman spectroscopy and confocal Raman microscopy.

During the workshop, participants worked with advanced systems including HORIBA LabRAM HR and Odyssey, gaining hands-on experience in spectral analysis, optimization of measurement parameters, and laboratory applications of Raman techniques 🧪📊

We’re excited to see our students continuously developing new analytical skills and bringing fresh expertise into our research activities 🚀

We’re proud to share that members of Wrocław Tech Fragrance Lab actively participated in the LEM Forum 🎓✨

Our PhD students, together with our MSc student and future PhD candidate, presented their research in the form of poster presentations 🧪📊 — showcasing the next generation of scientists in our team.

At the same time, the head of our lab, Daniel Strub, contributed to the forum as a panel participant, sharing insights and experience with the wider scientific community 🎤

We are proud to see both young researchers and experienced scientists representing our lab and building visibility for fragrance science and analytical research.

Alicja Surowiak, PhD recently had the opportunity to participate in a hands-on training at MatTek (now part of Sartorius) in Bratislava MatTek Life Sciences focused on in vitro skin irritation testing (OECD TG 439) using the EpiDerm™ model 🔬
During this visit, she worked on NCSs gaining practical experience with advanced tissue models and validated methods used in cosmetic and safety assessment.
This training was a valuable step in expanding our research capabilities at Wrocław Tech Fragrance Lab, especially in the area of alternative testing methods and cosmetic science.
Looking forward to implementing this knowledge in our lab🚀

We’re proud to share that our bachelor student Eryk Kurowski, supervised by Daniel Strub presented his research at analytical chemistry conference (X Konferencja „Chemometria, Metrologia i Sztuczna Inteligencja w Analityce)🎤✨

His work focused on the metrological evaluation of carbon adsorbers for ni****ne aerosol sampling🔬📊
