Her talk will focus on the history of tea cultivation in the island of Sao Miguel, Azores, showing how this development was shaped by complex cultural exchanges with China as part of a larger process of globalization with many twists and turns. Professora Sun Lam 孙琳 will give an open lecture to the PhD Program of Anthropology at the University of Coimbra on April 17th. Her talk will focus on the history of tea cultivation in the island of Sao Miguel, Azores, showing how this development was shaped by complex cultural exchanges with China as part of a larger process of globalization that is leading to the emergence of a new global tea culture and ethics. Professor Luiz Oosterbeek will give the next "aula aberta" of the PhD Program of Anthropology at the University of Coimbra. His talk will focus on the historical emergence of scientific archaeology, along with the wider field of anthropology, through the convergence of multiple disciplinary and epistemological frameworks. 𝐀𝐔𝐋𝐀𝐒 𝐀𝐁𝐄𝐑𝐓𝐀𝐒 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔
Tomorrow we will have the pleasure of welcoming one of the most distinguished living anthropologists at the Colégio de São Bento of the University of Coimbra. Michael Herzfeld is Ernest E. Monrad Professor of the Social Sciences Emeritus in the Department of Anthropology at Harvard University. He is the author of 14 books (including Cultural Intimacy: Social Poetics in the Nation-State, 1997; and Subversive Archaism: Troubling Traditionalists and the Politics of National Heritage, 2021). He has served as President of the Society for the Anthropology of Europe, was the editor of American Ethnologist and is currently a co-editor of HAU: Journal of Ethnographic Theory and an editor-at-large at Anthropological Quarterly. His work has been extremely influential within and beyond the field of anthropology and was translated into many languages including Bulgarian, Catalan, Chinese, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Serbian, Spanish, and Vietnamese.

Não percam as Aulas Abertas do Programa de Doutoramento em Antropologia da Universidade de Coimbra em março-maio de 2026. A agenda deste semestre é extremamente rica e inclui figuras maiores da antropologia nos três ramos de especialização do programa: antropologia social-cultural, antropologia biológica e antropologia forense. A primeira sessão decorrerá no dia 20 de março e contará com a presença de Michael Herzfeld (Harvard University). A segunda sessão decorrerá no dia 10 de abril e contará com a presença de Luiz Oosterbeek (Instituto Politécnico de Tomar / Centro de Geociências). A terceira sessão está agendada para dia 17 de abril e contará com a presença da sinóloga Sun Lam 孙琳 (Universidade do Minho). A última aula aberta do ano lectivo será proferida a 8 de maio pela antropóloga biológica Teresa Fernandes (Universidade de Évora). Todos os eventos são presenciais e decorrem no Colégio da São Bento da Universidade de Coimbra. Todas as pessoas são bem-vindas! Não é necessária inscrição! Basta aparecer!
