King Jaja of Opobo
(1821-1891)
Born in Igboland and sold as a slave to a Bonny trader at the age of twelve, he was named Jubo Jubogha by his first master. He was later sold to Chief Alali, the head of the Opubo Annie Pepple Royal House. Called Jaja by the British, this gifted and enterprising individual eventually became one of the most powerful men in the eastern Niger Delta.
The Niger Delta, where the Niger empties itself into the Gulf of Guinea in a system of intricate waterways, was the site of unique settlements called city-states.
From the fifteenth to the eighteenth century, Bonny, like the other city-states, gained its wealth from the profits of the slave trade. Here, an individual could attain prestige and power through success in business and, as in the case of Jaja, a slave could work his way up to head of state. The House was a socio-politicalinstitution and was the basic unit of the city-state.
In the nineteenth century—after the abolition of the slave trade in 1807—the trade in slaves was supplanted by the trade in palm oil, which was so vibrant that the region was named the Oil Rivers area.
The Houses in Bonny and other city-states controlled both the internal and external palm oil trade because the producers in the hinterland were forbidden to trade directly with the Europeans on the coast; the Europeans never left the coast for fear of malaria.
Astute in business and politics, Jaja became the head of the Anna Pepple House, extending its activities and influence by absorbing other houses, increasing operations in the hinterland and augmenting the number of European contacts. A power struggle ensued among rival factions in the houses at Bonny leading to the breakaway of the faction led by Jaja. He established a new settlement, which he named Opobo. He became King Jaja of Opobo and declared himself independent of Bonny.
Strategically located between Bonny and the production areas of the hinterland, King Jaja controlled trade and politics in the delta. In so doing, he curtailed trade at Bonny and fourteen of the eighteen Bonny houses moved to Opobo.
In a few years, he had become so wealthy that he was shipping palm oil directly to Liverpool. The British consul could not tolerate this situation. Jaja was offered a treaty of "protection", in return for which the chiefs usually surrendered their sovereignty. After Jaja's initial opposition, he was reassured, in vague terms, that neither his authority nor the sovereignty of Opobo would be threatened.
Jaja continued to regulate trade and levy duties on British traders, to the point where he ordered a cessation of trade on the river until one British firm agreed to pay duties. Jaja refused to comply with the consul's order to terminate these activities, despite British threats to bombard Opobo. Unknown to Jaja, the Scramble for Africa had taken place and Opobo was part of the territories allocated to Great Britain. This was the era of gunboat diplomacy, where Great Britain used her naval power to negotiate conditions favorable to the British.
Lured into a meeting with the British consul aboard a warship, Jaja was arrested and sent to Accra, where he was summarily tried and found guilty of "treaty breaking" and "blocking the highways of trade".
He was deported to St. Vincent, West Indies and four years later, he died en route to Nigeria after he was permitted to return.
Ironically, Jaja's dogged insistence on African independence and effective resistance exposed British imperialism and made him the first victim of foreign territorial intrusion in West Africa. The fate of Jaja reverberated through the entire Niger delta. Amazed at this turn of events, the other delta chiefs quickly capitulated.
In addition, the discovery of quinine as the cure for malaria enabled the British traders to bypass the middlemen and deal directly with the palm oil producers, thus precipitating the decline of the city-states.
King Jaja's downfall ensured a victory for British supremacy, paving the way for the eventual imposition of the colonial system in this region by the end of the century.

"When a glass is broken, the sound of breaking disappears immediately where as the glass pieces are scattered over the ground hurting whoever walks over it.

Similarly, when you say something that hurts people emotions and feelings, the voice disappears immediately but the hearts remains in pain for long."

Therefore, don't say except good and remember always the nine advises and prohibitions that almighty Allah gave us in Surath Al Hujuraat (The Sura of Islamic Manners) before you say something to anyone:

1- فتبينوا:
"Fa Tabayyanu": Investigate if you received an information lest you harm people out of ignorance.

2 - فأصلحوا:
"Fa Aslihu" Make settlement between ur brothers believers are brothers.

3- وأقسطوا:
"Wa Aqsitu": Act justly whenever there is a dispute, try for settlement and act justly among both parties as Allah loves those who acts justly.

4 - لا يسخر:
"La Yas'khar": don't ridicule people perhaps they may be better than you with almighty Allah.

5 - ولا تلمزوا:
"Wa La Talmizu": Donot insult one another.

6-ولا تنابزوا:
"Wa La Tanaabazu": Don't call offensive nicknames of one another.

7- اجتنبوا كثيرا من الظن:
"Ijtanibu Katheeran min AlZan"
Avoid negative assumptions, indeed some of the assumptions are sin.

8 - ولا تجسسوا:
"Wa La Tajassasu" and don't spy on each other.

9- ولا يغتب بعضكم بعضا:
"Wa La Yagtab": Do not backbite each other as its a major sin and like eating ur dead brother's flesh. with this I said Asalamualekun waramothulahi wabarakathu

Every king was once a crying baby and every
building was once a picture.
The person you admire so much was once
nobody, the most anointed man of God you
see was once a church member.
The person you attended his or her wedding was once a chief bachelor/spinster.
Why worry in Life? Its not about where you
are today but where you will reach tomorrow.
Alphabet "O" which stands for 'Opportunity',
is absent in "Yesterday" but available in
"Today" and appear thrice in "Tomorrow". So stay positive always and have hope......
The Future is bright!!
May God Grant you what you deserve.......

Public Service Announcement!!

Can electricity enter our body through the flash of digital camera?
Yes 100% it can happen.

This is a true incident, which happened with a 21 year old boy
studying engineering. He died in Keshwani hospital. He was admitted in the hospital in burned conditions. The reason?

He went to Amrawati for study tour, while coming back, he was waiting for train at railway station along with his friends.
Many of them were taking group photo in their mobiles with digital camera.
This boy was also there and trying to take group photo. The place where this boy was standing, complete grp photo was not coming. So to get complete grp
photo he went a little back. The place where he was standing, there was a electric wire with 40,000 volt.
As soon as he pressed the button of digital camera, the electricity of 40,000 volt entered the camera through the flash and then the fingers and then whole body.
All this happened in a fraction of few seconds and his 50% of his body was burnt, in that condition he was brought to Keshwani hospital , and then to Mumbai in an ambulance. He was unconscious for 1 and 1/2 days. As his body was 50% burnt, doctors were having less hope for him. Later on he died.
This can happen to anyone as we all are using mobile.

Are we learned and responsible??????

# Avoid using mobile phones at petrol pumps. Let me add - when transferring fuel into another container or generating set. (Check Punch of Thurs. 7April, 2016 pages 4-5 for the fire that killed father and two daughters on Adebiyi Street, Shomolu, Lagos)

# Avoid using mobile phones when u are driving.

# When mobile is on charging don't receive call. First remove the charging pin and then receive the call.

# When mobile is on charge don't put it on bed or wooden
furniture.

# Pls don't use mobile phone/digital camera -flash at railway stations or any other place, where there is a heavy electricity wire.

't use mobile phones where there is high electromagnetic waves or near electricity transformers etc.

't use mobile phone in the rain during lightning and thunder and if you must, stay far away from windows and doors.

This is for your s
afety.

After reading pls share it.

Because you might save a life by sharing this Information.

I feel it is good to share this post to enable us understand where we are coming from eventhough some of us want us to forget the past. But is it feasible?

1.Saudi Arabia with a population of 26m has 16 functional refineries, to commission another 2 of 400k barrel each per day capacity in 2016.

2. The U.S State of California alone has 26, Texas has 19 refineries
3. While Singapore with a population of 5.6million people has 3 refineries with combine refining capacity 1.3m bp/d
4. Nigeria has 3 or 4 (non functional refineries) built in the 70s & early 80s...now obsolete...16 years of oil boom we didn't add even ONE.
5. When you don't invest in our downstream sector, but handed out importation licenses to cronies & acolytes. Today we are paying the price.
6. We are paying the price of our past profligacy, irresponsibility in governance and blind leadership.
8. Egbin power plant was valued at $1.2 billion a German electricity company budded but GEJ sold is to Sahara energy at $470m.
9. Sahara had no previous antecedents on power plant aside importation of petrol but we handed them our LARGEST thermal plant..
10. Easier to cry today but whatever problems we see today was created yesterday with the active connivance of all of us...
11. Active connivance in the sense that we all kept quiet & looked away... Our day just dey break?
12. I am not exonerating the FG of blame, but laying the facts as they are... While you have the right to be angry, pls be angry with sense.
13. Change will come but it will not come overnight... A lot of mess was made either out of omission or commission, change will take a while
14. I am laying these facts out and I challenge anybody with contrary facts to bring it.
15. I am doing this bcos I feel the pain and agony we are going thru and I feel the collective hurt but we must understand why we are here.
16. I pray that the present FG will have the courage and conviction to right so many of the ills of the past. Our future depends on it.
17. May Nigeria be great again & may our collective suffering spur us to a greater sense of true nationhood. Nigeria shall rise again!!! As we pray, let's back it up with action. It is crazy for a nation with abundant yam to be importing pounded yam.

Posterity will judge us.

Good morning. Have a lovely weekend. ({})
