The Carnegie Mellon Portugal Program is an international partners

The CMU Portugal Program is a platform for education, research and innovation that brings together Portuguese universities, research institutions and companies, in cooperation with Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). The partnership was launched in 2006, and was renewed for another five years in 2012. Its activities are funded by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), supported by the Conselho de Reitores das Universidades Portuguesas (CRUP), and co-financed by business partners and by CMU. The program leverages a vibrant research community, a solid and close partnership between faculty at Portuguese universities and at CMU, a strong collaboration with industry, and a deep integration in international knowledge networks.

💬 Luis Gomes joined the Dual Degree Ph.D. Program in Software Engineering, offered by Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto (FEUP) and Carnegie Mellon University Kenneth C. Griffin School of Computer Science, in the 2021/2022 academic year.

🎯 He recently defended his thesis, “Multimodal AI Code Assistants for the Next Generation of Software Development”, at Carnegie Mellon University, supervised by Rui Maranhão Abreu (UP) Jonathan Aldrich and Vincent Hellendoorn (CMU).

💥 Looking back on this remarkable journey, Luis shared his experience and the impact the program had on his personal and professional growth.

🎉 A celebration of two decades of collaboration between 🇵🇹 universities, Carnegie Mellon University, industry partners, and the innovation ecosystem.

Get a first look at the sessions and themes that will shape the conference:

🟥 Fostering Research Collaborations showcases recent CMU Portugal-funded projects in areas such as AI, neuroscience, autonomous systems, sustainability, and immersive technologies.

🟥 From Research to Market focuses on innovation, entrepreneurship, and technology transfer, including contributions from CMU leaders and founders of startups like Addvolt, Feedzai, and Oblivious Labs.

🌟On October 21, at 2:00 PM, the Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa Auditorium welcomes Professor Irene Fonseca for the keynote moment of the 8th CIÊNCIAS Research & Innovation Day.

An FCUL alumna and internationally renowned mathematician, Fonseca is a faculty member at Carnegie Mellon University, a key collaborator of , recipient of the Universidade de Lisboa Award, and featured in Forbes Portugal’s Powerful Women in Business (Education & Science).

Her lecture, titled “The Mathematics of Imaging”, brings forward the deep mathematical ideas shaping today’s imaging technologies.

🌍 Study for 3 years at a 🇵🇹 University and 2 years at , with full tuition and stipends included.

⏳Deadlines:
Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences - December 1st: Cognitive Neuroscience (PCN) and Neural Computation (PNC);

Carnegie Mellon University School of Computer Science - December 9th: Computer Science (CS), Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Language Technologies (LTI), Machine Learning (ML), Robotics, Societal Computing (SC), and Software Engineering (SE)

Applications to the Carnegie Mellon College of Engineering will be held in October-December:
Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) - October 1st to December 15th
Engineering and Public Policy (EPP) - October 15th to December 15th

This Summit marks the first joint conference, held during Phase 4, bringing together , MIT Portugal Program, and UT Austin Portugal Program.

This initial version of the agenda offers a preview of the sessions and themes shaping the Summit. Additional speakers and details will be added as confirmations progress.

🗣️ José Manuel Mendonça, coordinator of the Portugal-U.S. partnerships, and Pedro Oliveira, Dean of Nova SBE participated in the Transatlantic Talks podcast, revisiting the creation of partnerships , MIT Portugal Program, and UT Austin Portugal Program, and how transatlantic collaboration transformed the Portuguese academic ecosystem, boosting innovation, entrepreneurship, and internationalization.🌐

🎯 Renewed until 2030, the partnerships continue to strengthen national talent and open new strategic opportunities.
