The CMU Portugal Program is a platform for education, research and innovation that brings together Portuguese universities, research institutions and companies, in cooperation with Carnegie Mellon University (CMU). The partnership was launched in 2006, and was renewed for another five years in 2012. Its activities are funded by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), supported by the Con

The program leverages a vibrant research community, a solid and close partnership between faculty at Portuguese universities and at CMU, a strong collaboration with industry, and a deep integration in international knowledge networks.

🚀 The eGames Lab, composed of 22 entities, is boosting Portugal’s game‑development sector and creative industries, with the collaboration of the Program under the PRR Mobilizing Agendas.

❗🚨Registration is now OPEN for the Conference (29 October) and the Portugal–US Partnerships 2026 Summit (30 October), both taking place at Universidade de Aveiro!

🟥 29th October (Thursday): The CMU Portugal Conference "From Ideas to Impact: 20 Years of CMU-Portugal Partnership" is dedicated to members of the CMU Portugal Program community.

🟧 30th October (Friday): The joint conference “Portugal-US Partnerships 2026 Summit: From Knowledge to Competitiveness” will bring together , MIT Portugal Program, and UT Austin Portugal Program to reflect on how international partnerships can continue contributing to Portugal’s scientific, technological, and economic development. 🌐

🎯 The Joint Conference’s preliminary agenda is already out — take a first look at the sessions shaping this year’s Summit.

💡👨‍🎓The Call for Posters is also officially open: MSc and Ph.D. students across the 3 Portugal–US Partnerships can submit their work for a chance to present in Aveiro and compete for Summit awards!

🗓️CMU Portugal was part of the inaugural edition of the “Ciência e Inovação” (Science and Innovation) Conference in Lisbon.

👩‍🎓 CMU Portugal Academy is open for applications (don’t miss the deadline!)

🏫 The community is growing: CMU Portugal will welcome 9 new dual degree Ph.D. students in the 2026/2027 academic year and will host 19 visiting research scholars at Carnegie Mellon University in the Fall!

💪 Community achievements: José M. F. Moura received an honorary degree from York University, PI Mahmoud Tavakoli won a 150k€ ERC Grant, Alum Manuel Reis Carneiro won Best Ph.D. Thesis Award by the Applied Sciences MDPI, student Marta Freitas’s paper was published in Nature NPJ Flexible Electronics…

👏 Congratulations to Lourenço, Ph.D. student at feup and researcher at GECAD for being selected for a “R&D@USA” grant from to undertake a research internship in the USA!

✈︎ In August, Afonso is heading to CMU's School of Computer Science (Carnegie Mellon University School of Computer Science) where he will work closely with Professor Eric Poe Xing to explore how foundation models can scale context‑aware data‑stream learning.

The “R&D@USA” grantees will conduct research at 🇺🇸 academic and scientific institutions, enhancing connections between Portuguese and North American institutions and fostering institutional partnerships.

👏 Congratulations to Afonso Lourenço, Ph.D. student at FEUP and researcher at GECAD, for being selected for a “R&D@USA” grant from Fundação Luso-Americana to undertake a research internship in the USA!

🌟 Congratulations to alum, Manuel Reis Carneiro! His Ph.D. thesis on high‑fidelity on‑skin bioelectronics won the 2025 Best PhD Thesis Award from the Applied Sciences MDPI journal. 👏

Manuel concluded his dual degree Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 2025, working at Carnegie Mellon University Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE) and FCTUC & ISR Coimbra, with guidance from Professors Mahmoud Tavakoli and Carmel Majidi.

💡 He is currently continuing his research in soft bioelectronics while lecturing at ETH Zürich.

✨ Summer semester wrap‑up at Fallingwater!
🌿 Nine students currently studying in Pittsburgh took a well‑deserved break to visit Frank Lloyd Wright’s iconic house “Fallingwater”, enjoying a day in nature and celebrating the end of the summer term together.

🤝 The group (Afonso Carvalho, Álvaro Silva, Rui Melo, Francisco Vieira, Mariana Ferreira Nunes, Luis Gomes, Susana Marques, André Duarte, and Teresa Fortes) represented six Carnegie Mellon University departments and six 🇵🇹 institutions, celebrating a vibrant community.

In the Fall, the community will grow, welcoming 9 new Dual Degree students (including four starting their Program in Pittsburgh), as well as 19 visiting students and faculty members.

Here's to an amazing Summer break! 😎🏝️
