Cyer Rehan Nuer (1910-1981)
Traditional leader.
Born in Twic, Bhar El Ghazal. Educated under Fr Arthur Nebel at Kuajok Catholic Missionary School, where he was baptized as Paulino, and at Wau Intermediate School (1924-1928), under Fr Mason. When he left school, he showed brilliance in his academic work and was therefore recommended for teaching. Posted at Kuajok (1928-1931). Later he shifted and became a clerk and was the first native in the whole Northern Bhar El Ghazal to be appointed to such position(1931-1946).
British Administrator reluctantly acquiesced to the request of his people to return and take over the chieftaincy of Adiang section of Twic Dinka. The first educated chief in whole Bhar El Ghazal. Cyer Rehan took traditional leadership position in 1946 from his half brother, paramount chief Mawiir Rehan, the second chief of Adiang. The first head-chief was his father, Rehan Nuer. In 1947, he was selected by the Governor of Bhar El Ghazal as a delegate to Juba Conference. He underlined his stance that Southern Sudan had alot to learn from British before participating in the National assembly. Like Chief Lotunyeny Apeukileng, Hasan Fartak, Lolik Lado, and Tete Kajo-Keji, he stuck to his original position.
Selected in 1948 as one of the Representatives of Bhar El Ghazal in legislative Assembly in Khartoum. He was a Catholic laity who travelled to Vatican, Italy, to celebrate the Holy Year Celebration in 1950. He was also one of the three dignitaries from Southern Sudan who represented the Region in the Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in London 2 June 1952. Elected to the House of Representatives, Khartoum, in 1953 and in February 1958. Attended many conferences on Dinka Ordinance. Awarded a Robe of Honour by British Colonial Administration and another First Class Robe of Honour in 1958.
