What: lunch lecture on love, alienation and capitalism with GSA
When: Wednesday 26/2 at 13.10
Where: D137

Veronica Flyman is invited to talk about her doctorate thesis about love, alienation and capitalism. You are welcome to join us and ask questions and discuss the topic! Feel free to bring lunch with you. ✨

The thesis project ”Love, Alienation, and Capitalism: Singlehood and Gender in Contemporary Sweden” is about experiences of Swedish singles’ and their experiences of love. The project is contextualized in a contemporary era where love constitutes an ideal for how we should relate to each other in our intimate relationships. The aim is to examine how singles succeed or fail to achieve this ideal, and what consequences it has for their self-image and well-being. The purpose is also to theoretically further develop the concept of alienation, based on the empirical material, where alienation is understood as an alienation of the ideals one strives to achieve.

Love is defined in the project as a relationship in which mutual recognition of each other’s vulnerability is expressed, and which is necessary for a positive and secure relationship with oneself. In other words, love is not necessarily something that can only be achieved in romantic relationships, but also in other forms of intimate relationships.

Critical pedagogies and social justice
📍Campus Haga, room K001
🕐 15:00 on Thursday 23rd of January

“There’s no such thing as neutral education. Education either functions as an instrument to bring about conformity or freedom.”*

In this seminar, we will discuss the main concepts of critical pedagogy and its relevance for today’s education. Critical pedagogy calls for reflection and action on power relations and social injustices. What are the different critical pedagogies today? What does this mean for curricula and teaching practices? How does it relate to gender equality and s*xuality education? I will also briefly introduce some examples from my doctoral research and discuss how discourses in curricula matter regarding social issues.

Bogata Kardos is a PhD student at the Department of Education, Communication and Learning at GU. In her PhD project she is investigating s*x education curricula and policies by analyzing discourses about po*******hy and violence against women. She has worked in different educational programs for 15 years, in Sweden and in Hungary.
