The thesis project ”Love, Alienation, and Capitalism: Singlehood and Gender in Contemporary Sweden” is about experiences of Swedish singles’ and their experiences of love. The project is contextualized in a contemporary era where love constitutes an ideal for how we should relate to each other in our intimate relationships. The aim is to examine how singles succeed or fail to achieve this ideal, and what consequences it has for their self-image and well-being. The purpose is also to theoretically further develop the concept of alienation, based on the empirical material, where alienation is understood as an alienation of the ideals one strives to achieve.
Love is defined in the project as a relationship in which mutual recognition of each other’s vulnerability is expressed, and which is necessary for a positive and secure relationship with oneself. In other words, love is not necessarily something that can only be achieved in romantic relationships, but also in other forms of intimate relationships.
