NUS Centre for Family and Population Research - NUS CFPR Welcome to the Official page of the Centre for Family and Population Research (CFPR)

The Centre for Family and Population Research (CFPR) is an interdisciplinary Centre at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, NUS that advances scientific research and training on family and population changes particularly in Asia. The Centre aims to stimulate dialogue and foster cross disciplinary collaboration between students, faculty researchers, practitioners, and policy makers. The goal is to address critical issues and policies related to the family's well-being. We will utilise life course and international perspectives using a range of quantitative and qualitative methods. In the long run, CFPR envisions to achieve the following:

β€’ To provide thought leadership in family and population research, particularly in Asia.

β€’ To become a regional training centre for family and population research.

β€’ To bridge basic academic research with public policies that affect families and children’s well-being.

β€’ To collaborate with family and population centres around the world.

Earlier today, we had the pleasure of hosting A/Prof Mary Chong for an insightful seminar titled "Looking Back, Envisioning the Future: Life Course Perspectives on Promoting Maternal Health and Child Nutrition".

The seminar explored the importance of nutrition across different stages of life, highlighting findings from Singapore's birth cohort studies and research on maternal and child nutrition in Southeast Asia. A/Prof Chong also shared insights into how early-life nutrition influences long-term health outcomes and the importance of developing context-specific interventions.

Thank you to A/Prof Chong for sharing her insights and to everyone who joined us, both in person and online!

CFPR Steering Committee Member and former CFPR Co-Director A/Prof Bussarawan (Puk) Teerawichitchainan wrote an East Asia Forum analysis titled β€œVietnam’s pronatalist turn must go beyond the baby bonus”. The commentary discusses Vietnam’s recent shift from fertility control policy to pronatalist policy. She argues that one-off cash incentives alone are unlikely to reverse low fertility. Instead, A/Prof Puk highlights the need for broader support for families, including affordable childcare, parental leave, supportive workplaces, and long-term preparation for population ageing.

CFPR Steering Committee Members A/Prof Bussarawan (Puk) Teerawichitchainan and Dr Tan Poh Lin were recently featured in Fortune, sharing their perspectives on the "SG Child Support Package" recently unveiled by Singapore's Prime Minister Lawrence Wong at the National Day Rally. They discuss why financial support alone may not be enough, and why wider issues such as work-family pressures, parenting expectations and long-term family well-being matter too.

CFPR Co-Director A/Prof Mu Zheng contributed an article to IPS Commons, β€œDelayed, More Deliberate, and Less Fertile: What the Latest General Household Survey Tells Us About Marriage in Singapore”, which examines what the latest General Household Survey (GHS) reveals about changing patterns of marriage and family life in Singapore.

In the article, A/Prof Mu highlights that while more young Singaporeans are delaying marriage, marriage itself remains highly valued and quite common by midlife. Rather than signalling a decline in marriage, later marriage reflects a shift towards more deliberate partner selection, with financial security, emotional readiness and relationship confidence increasingly seen as prerequisites for marriage.

She also discusses the growing separation between marriage and parenthood, as fertility among married couples continues to decline. While marriage remains an important life goal for many Singaporeans, having children is increasingly seen as a separate and more discretionary decision. With parenthood requiring significant financial, emotional and time commitments, couples are placing greater emphasis on whether they feel able to provide their children with the quality of life, attention and opportunities they aspire to offer.
