And what a moment for ! Building Singapore's next generation of aerospace talent. ✈️

RP is proud to announce a new partnership with Singapore Aero Engine Services Pte Ltd (SAESL), the world's largest Rolls-Royce Trent engine maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) provider. Signed at MRO Asia-Pacific 2026 by Mr Chris Pattinson, CEO of SAESL, and Ms Jeanne Liew, Principal and CEO of RP, the MOU creates clearer pathways for learners to build careers in aerospace engineering and MRO.

Through this partnership, learners can progress into SAESL's Traineeship Programme and Work-Study Diploma pathway, with opportunities for internships, industry projects, and direct engagement with aerospace professionals. Working professionals looking to keep pace with evolving aerospace technologies will also benefit from upskilling opportunities.

At the heart of it all is applied learning. Through RP's Aerospace Hub, The ARCH, learners gain hands-on experience with authentic aerospace systems and industry-relevant training — bridging the classroom with the technical competencies the industry demands.

A chance encounter with a flight simulator in kindergarten sparked Shafriel Nur Iman's fascination with aviation. He was later given several remote-controlled helicopters to fly at home. “I crashed quite a few of them,” he jokes. 😅

Fast forward to today: Shafriel will represent at WorldSkills Shanghai 2026. He'll compete in the Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) skill area, which is making its debut at the competition.

At Serangoon Secondary School, an Applied Learning Programme introduced Shafriel to 3D modelling, programming and drone piloting. It set his journey into aviation in motion. In Secondary 3, he and a teammate put these skills to the test at the DJI RoboMaster Drone Tournament. They came second.

Aspiring to become a pilot or air traffic controller, Shafriel pursued the Diploma in Aviation Management at Republic Polytechnic School of Engineering - RP SEG.

At RP, Shafriel found a new way to pursue his interest in drones through the Drone Soccer team. As part of the pioneer batch, he represented RP at the Drone Odyssey Challenge 2025, where the team won the championship title. The team later went on to represent Singapore at the FIDA World Cup in South Korea.

It was through his lecturer that Shafriel later learned about the chance to compete at WorldSkills Shanghai 2026. He saw it as a chance to sharpen his skills in drone piloting and drone building, so he took it.

“Being able to represent Singapore is an honour, and something my younger self would be proud of,” he says.

To prepare for the competition, Shafriel has spent months honing his skills in assembling, maintaining and repairing drones. He has also built on his 3D modelling skills, while deepening his understanding of how drones are designed, operated and controlled.

His hard work is already paying off. Shafriel recently came first runner-up in a friendly competition against participants from China, Japan, Brazil, Macau and Saudi Arabia.

🚗 The future of autonomous mobility needs engineers who are ready for it.

CNA visited RP’s Aerospace Hub (The ARCH) to see how our students are preparing for the future of autonomous transport. They work with sensors, mapping, navigation and coding, testing autonomous systems in real-world conditions, rain or shine.

“We are always preparing our students to be industry ready and to keep pace with advances in technology and industry needs,” said Dr Quek Yang Thee, Assistant Director (Capability and Industry) at Republic Polytechnic School of Engineering - RP SEG.

At RP, all Engineering students begin with a common Year 1 module covering the fundamentals of autonomous mobility. From October, around 80 students each year from the Diploma in Mobility & Robotic Systems will also gain hands-on training in Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).

This will give them the skills to maintain and troubleshoot increasingly sophisticated vehicles, meeting growing industry demand for these capabilities. ADAS technologies currently assist drivers through features such as adaptive cruise control, lane-change warnings, and automatic emergency braking.

For Republic Polytechnic School of Engineering - RP SEG student Arfan Amirun, representing Singapore at WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 is a dream come true, and a chance to prove himself.

Arfan first encountered WorldSkills while at ITE College Central. He joined the training programme and was shortlisted to compete, but withdrew to focus on his studies.

When his lecturer, Mr Mohamed Yoosuf, asked him to take part in WorldSkills Singapore 2025, Arfan seized the opportunity.

And he did not disappoint. Arfan went on to win Gold in the Team Event in the Rail Vehicle Technology skill area. This earned him the chance to represent Singapore at WorldSkills Shanghai 2026.

For the past few months, Arfan has been preparing for the competition at RP and during his internship with SBS Transit Ltd.

“I'm grateful to SBS Transit for giving me this internship opportunity. As we don't have actual trains at RP, the internship gave me valuable hands-on experience in maintaining and troubleshooting trains,” says Arfan.

Once a week, Arfan returns to RP to train using visualisation software. This helps him learn the tools, processes and steps needed for the competition. He has also travelled to vocational training colleges in China to get hands-on experience with the trains he will work on at WorldSkills Shanghai.

With some competition tasks lasting up to six hours, Arfan knows that WorldSkills Shanghai will test more than just his technical abilities.

“It's a test of both my endurance and technical skills,” he explains. “But I’ll do my best, learn as much as possible, and enjoy the process.”

From passing up the chance to compete during his ITE days to now representing Singapore on the world stage, Arfan has come a long way. 💪
