All hands on deck!

⚓ PIER71’s 10th Smart Port Challenge (SPC) is back, with expanded support to help maritime start-ups scale.

Launched at 2026 by NUS Enterprise and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore - MPA, this year’s edition introduces Mentors-in-Residence Plus (MIR+) and Venture2Capital to help start-ups secure funding, enter new markets and scale.

The launch was officiated by Mr Murali Pillai, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Law and Ministry of Transport; Mr Ang Wee Keong, MPA Chief Executive; and Professor Benjamin Tee, Vice President (Ecosystem Building), NUS Enterprise.

Dr Tan Sian Wee, NUS Senior Vice President (Innovation & Enterprise), noted that “the key challenge in maritime innovation is not building solutions, but ensuring these can be deployed at scale.” Since 2018, PIER71 has supported nearly 170 start-ups, which have collectively raised over S$150 million, with new initiatives to help them overcome adoption barriers and expand globally.

🚀 Applications for SPC 2026 are now open till 15 June 2026: https://pier71.sg/smart-port-challenge-2026/

From NUS Overseas Colleges (NOC) to rethinking chocolate one bar at a time 🍫, Fossa Chooclate's co-founder Yilina Leong shows that a taste for experimentation can go a long way.

In CNA 938's Made in SG🇸🇬, Melanie Oliveiro speaks with Yilina and her co-founder, Jay Chua, about building Fossa Chocolate into a homegrown artisanal bean-to-bar brand.

Yilina shares how her NOC experience shaped her entrepreneurial journey, while the pair reflect on why they started the business, and their commitment to single‑origin chocolate, made with specialty‑grade, traceable cacao beans sourced directly from trusted farmers, with a focus on fair pricing and sustainable agroforestry.

They also discussed crafting distinctive Singaporean flavours, from 🥚Salted Egg cereal to Pulut Hitam (black glutinous rice pudding), that set Fossa apart.

Your biggest asset as a founder isn't VC connections or a Silicon Valley network. It's expertise and knowing how to deploy it in today's world.

Dr. Krishna Palem, founder and CEO of Accelequant, went from professor to quantum computing founder, armed with research that the IEEE named one of seven world-changing technologies. He proves that "good enough" outmatches "perfect" in both semiconductors and quantum computing.

Talent, capital and infrastructure are already in place. The next step? Mindset. ✨

In a commentary in The Straits Times, Dr Sian Wee Tan 陈善威, Senior Vice President (Innovation and Enterprise), National University of Singapore, highlighted that building more globally competitive start-ups will depend on strengthening entrepreneurial instinct: the confidence to act, experiment and learn even in uncertainty.

⚙️ While Singapore’s strengths in precision and efficiency support scaling, he noted that entrepreneurship often begins earlier: engaging users before being fully ready, testing imperfect prototypes, and iterating quickly rather than waiting for complete information.

Dr Tan also pointed to experiential learning as a key enabler. NUS Enterprise's initiatives such as NUS Overseas Colleges (NOC) immerse students in start-up ecosystems globally, while the S$150 million Venture Capital Programme boosts the growth of deep-tech start-ups. 🚀

What will it take for Singapore’s deep tech breakthroughs to scale globally? How do we move beyond early innovation to lasting impact?

💡 In a recent interview with The Business Times, Professor Benjamin Tee, Vice President (Innovation and Enterprise), NUS Enterprise, shared that deep tech is no longer just about moving from “zero to one”, but progressing to “10 or 100”.

This requires greater emphasis on growth-stage capital, targeted investments and long-term commitment. He also highlighted the importance of talent development and ecosystem support to sustain momentum.

in Singapore is at an inflection point.

Singapore is rapidly emerging as a major cyber hub in Asia, but building a cyber start-up here is very different from Silicon Valley or other key markets. The go-to-market is different. Buyers' needs and cybersecurity challenges are different. The role of government is very different.

That's exactly why this upcoming special event by CyberSG TIG Collaboration Centre is one to watch: It will bring together some of Singapore's top founders, investors & ecosystem leaders for an honest discussion about what it actually takes to build and scale cyber companies from here.

If you are building, investing, or just curious about cyber in Asia - would love to have you join us.

📌 Event: Founders & Investors in Conversation - Building Cyber Start-ups in Singapore
🗓Date & Time: 10 April 2026, Friday, 2:00pm – 4:00pm (SGT)

10 start-ups. 🚀 Three bold solutions. 💡 S$1.5 million awarded. 💰

Congratulations to Logice, Sembuh AI and StratifiCare, which emerged as top winners at the recent inaugural Deep Tech Seed to A Growth Expansion Programme (Deep SAGE) Demo Day! Each start-up received S$500,000 in funding from TIS Inc. along with continued strategic and ex*****on support through the programme.

Deep SAGE supports seed-stage start-ups through the “valley of death” between accelerator graduation and Series A funding. It is jointly delivered by NUS Enterprise through BLOCK71 Global, our network of physical accelerators across 11 cities, and TIS Inc., which brings experience working with large enterprises to help start-ups scale.

Professor Benjamin Tee, Vice President (Innovation and Enterprise), NUS Enterprise, shared that the programme’s early success reflects “strong demand… for deeper ex*****on support beyond mentorship and capital.” Through its distinct fractional C-suite model, seasoned executives work alongside founders to “drive ex*****on” and build the commercial rigour needed to scale towards pre-Series A and Series A.

Mr Furusho Kensaku, Managing Executive Officer, TIS Inc., added that in deep tech, “the gap… is not innovation, but ex*****on.” Deep SAGE aims to bridge this gap by combining capital with strategic guidance and connections to enterprise partners to support start-ups’ growth.

StratifiCare: https://www.stratificare.com

We look forward to seeing this cohort build momentum and take the next step towards global growth!
