Before that, we sat down with students from NUS Alice Lee Centre for Nursing Studies, NUS Computing and NUS Acacia College to hear what inspires them to keep giving back. 💙🧡

Every dollar collected goes directly towards Community Chest Singapore, supporting communities in-need – from children with special needs and at-risk youths, to persons with mental health needs, adults with disabilities and senior citizens.

Meaningful moments, one game at a time. ❤️

Students from NUS Business School, National University of Singapore Flag 2026 recently spent an afternoon with seniors at CareElderly @ Golden Ginger Active Ageing Centre, bonding over a lively game of Bingo. Held in partnership with Care Community Services Society (CCSS), the session brought together freshmen and seniors for an afternoon filled with laughter, conversation, and new friendships.

Since 2021, Biz Flag and CCSS have partnered to create meaningful opportunities for students and beneficiaries to build lasting connections. This year, Biz Flag organised community engagement activities featuring rock painting, art jamming, mini ship-building with children, terrarium-making, traditional kampung games, and flower-making with pipe cleaners alongside seniors.

For the freshmen, it was a memorable introduction to volunteering. Beyond the activities, they discovered how simply showing up, spending time together, and building genuine connections can make a meaningful difference, not only for the seniors, but for themselves as well.

Huge congratulations to Associate Professor Zhou Wentao from NUS Alice Lee Centre for Nursing Studies, part of NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine for receiving the President's Award for Nurses 2026 - the highest accolade in Singapore's nursing profession!

This prestigious award celebrates her outstanding contributions to patient care delivery, education, research and administration. What an incredible achievement!

Assoc Prof Zhou said: "I am deeply honoured and humbled to receive the President's Award for Nurses. Although my work has expanded into education, policy and international collaboration, my patients continue to remind me why all of this matters. Every patient encounter reinforces the importance of preparing nurses, strengthening healthcare systems and shaping policies that ultimately improve care.”

A bright idea for cleaner chemistry. 💡

Inspired by an incandescent lightbulb, NUS researchers from CHCI have developed a compact reactor that uses electricity to heat a thin metal filament to more than 1,200°C.

Because the filament is far smaller than a conventional chemical reactor, the system concentrates intense heat only where the reaction takes place, instead of heating the entire reactor.

Across three studies, the reactor demonstrated its potential to support more sustainable chemical processes, from producing hydrogen and recovering reusable materials from plastic waste to converting methane into useful chemicals.

The Johor Bahru–Singapore RTS Link is set to reshape cross-border travel, but its long-term success will depend on how well commuters can get to their final destinations once they arrive.

Without reliable last-mile connections, many may still choose to drive, adding to congestion and making public transport less attractive when buses are caught in the same traffic.

Dedicated bus lanes and congestion pricing may be difficult choices, but they could help make buses a reliable alternative to private cars, rather than a last resort.

Dr Timothy Wong shares his thoughts on how the right policies, introduced at the right time, can help cities prepare for a more connected future.

Rawr! Games, art and new friendships filled three days at Camp Simba 2026 🦁 Medical student facilitators including volunteers from and helped create a supportive space at this annual camp for young people from families affected by serious illness.

This year, 62 children and youths bonded through team challenges, creative activities and outings to Gardens by the Bay and the ArtScience Museum.

For the student facilitators, the camp was also a chance to learn about care, communication and connection beyond the classroom.

"… we are living beside one another rather than with one another."

Amidst conversations focused on economic resilience, productivity and growth, researchers from the Institute of Policy Studies - IPS make a compelling case that there's another form of resilience we shouldn't take for granted: our relationships with one another.

The risk of a "social recession" goes beyond loneliness. It reflects a gradual weakening of the social ties, trust and sense of belonging that hold communities together.

As Singapore's population ages, households become smaller and patterns of social interaction continue to evolve, investing in our social fabric becomes increasingly important. Strong social connections foster trust, encourage civic participation and create the social capital that helps communities navigate uncertainty and support one another through times of change.

Parenting vs PhDs: which is more challenging? 👶📚

PhD graduates from the Class of Mervin Tee and Cindy Chan took on both at the same time. While pursuing their PhDs at NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health, the couple welcomed their first child, balancing thesis revisions, research setbacks, sleepless nights with newborn feeds, and the joys of early parenthood.

For Mervin, who once failed his O-Levels, the journey to a PhD has been anything but conventional. He persevered through polytechnic and university while working part-time, eventually completing his PhD in record time and graduating alongside Cindy. For Cindy, earning a PhD while navigating pregnancy, childbirth and the demands of caring for a newborn was an equally remarkable achievement.

Through partnership, resilience and unwavering support for one another, Mervin and Cindy prove that life's most demanding journeys can become deeply meaningful. 👨‍🎓👩‍🎓👶

As the curtain falls on Commencement, we celebrate the graduation of our inaugural cohort of Anthropology majors. As pioneers of the programme, they have not only explored what it means to understand people, cultures and communities, but also built a close-knit community, established traditions of their own, and laid the foundations for future generations of Anthropology students.

Behind every start-up founder is a village, and for these Class of graduates, that village was the vibrant NUS Enterprise ecosystem.

Through global exposure at NUS Overseas Colleges, and the supportive community at NUS Enterprise House (N-House) and BLOCK71 Singapore , these founders successfully launched impactful ventures before graduation:

🌾 Agrolitik co-founders Jayden Tan (National University of Singapore, College of Humanities and Sciences), Tsui Yi Wern and Yong Li An (both from NUS Computing) are advancing sustainable agriculture with data-driven precision farming tools for smallholder farmers in Southeast Asia.
⚕️ s’up co-founders Leipakshi Gupta (NUS College of Design and Engineering), Benecia Tang and NUS alumna Pragya Jha (both from NUS Computing) are developing wearable tech that provides actionable insights on spinal alignment and posture care.
👃 Scentura co-founders and NUS Business School, National University of Singapore graduates Jocelyn Lim and Valerie Wong are innovating the retail space with scent-based marketing strategies for cold food businesses.
