A new space for music education and performance has opened at NUS! The Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music has officially opened the YST Cube, designed to support evolving approaches to music education and artistic practice, the Cube offers students more opportunities to develop and present their artistic ideas beyond conventional performance formats.

The space will also welcome arts organisations and external hirers for performances, rehearsals and collaborative projects, supporting artistic exchange between YST and Singapore's wider arts community.

A touchscreen you can wear on your sleeve! 👕 Led by Asst Prof Tural Khudiyev from NUS Materials Science Engineering at the NUS College of Design and Engineering , the research team developed a fibre that functions as pixels and senses touch at the same time — creating the world’s first touchscreen built into a washable and breathable garment.

The technology could pave the way for clothing that serves as an interface to our health data and digital devices. Combined with AI, it could enable personalised health monitoring, feedback and assistance.

No sugar, no problem? Not necessarily.

Singapore’s Nutri-Grade labels have helped consumers identify products high in sugar content and nudge them towards making healthier beverage choices. But as the use of artificial sweeteners becomes more prevalent, does choosing a lower-sugar drink always mean making a healthier choice?

In a commentary for The Straits Times, NUS’ Jared Ng and Assoc Prof Mary Chong examine the limits of nutrition labels and why building health literacy is just as important as raising awareness.

They discuss how consumers can better understand what the labels mean, why it is important to look beyond sugar content, and how Singapore can further strengthen its approach to promoting healthier beverage choices.

“My AI did it” cannot become the 21st century equivalent of “The dog ate my homework”.

From solving complex mathematical problems to managing everyday tasks, AI is opening up new possibilities. But as AI agents become increasingly capable of acting independently, questions of accountability and human control are becoming more pressing.

In a commentary for The Straits Times, NUS College Dean and David Marshall Professor of Law Simon Chesterman examines the benefits and risks of increasingly autonomous AI agents and argues for clear limits to their development and deployment, with meaningful human accountability and safeguards remaining essential.

🧠 From seven years to five! NUS has introduced Singapore’s first accelerated clinical psychology degree programme, shortening the pathway to becoming a clinical psychologist without compromising on training.

Launched by NUS Psychology, the Concurrent Degree Programme in Clinical Psychology (CDP-CP) combines undergraduate and Master’s studies into a structured five-year pathway, with students completing the same advanced coursework and clinical training at the Master’s level.

The programme builds on NUS’ longstanding efforts to strengthen Singapore’s mental healthcare workforce, helping more qualified clinical psychologists enter the profession sooner to meet the country’s growing need for mental health support. 💙🧡

🍦 When was the last time you bought some ice cream from a pushcart?

“Scoops of Memory” was one of the student-led community heritage projects presented at a showcase event held by NUS Libraries last month, the culmination of the year-long Temasek Foundation-National University of Singapore Heritage Champions Programme (TF–NUS Heritage Champions Programme). The project focused on the stories of ice cream uncles, who have been a fixture of Singapore's streets for decades.

Through training workshops, a heritage ideathon and hands-on mentorship, ten student teams uncovered and documented Singapore’s lesser-known heritage – from Southern Islanders and Hainanese enclaves to biodiversity and maritime histories.

Mooting is more than a competition. It is an opportunity for aspiring lawyers to sharpen their legal reasoning, develop their advocacy skills and learn from those who came before them.

Celebrating over 50 years of mooting excellence, generations of NUS Law Jessup mooters came together for a special reunion dinner, marking the Faculty's historic victory at the 67th Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition earlier this year. The gathering also celebrated NUS Law's longstanding tradition of learning and mentorship.

The evening also honoured Emeritus Professor Robert Beckman, whose decades of dedication to mooting have shaped generations of NUS Law students, with the launch of the Robert Beckman Mooting Fund to support future mooters in international moots and advocacy competitions.

What does it take to turn a breakthrough into real-world impact? 💡

Marking a new chapter in NUS’ 25-year journey of entrepreneurship and innovation, NUS Enterprise has evolved into NUSX – bringing research, talent, industry, capital and global markets closer together to help discoveries become scalable ventures.

At the inaugural A5X summit, that next chapter came to life: from an AI-powered engine for research commercialisation and new global pathways for NUS ventures, to more than 40 NUS-affiliated ventures and teams showcasing emerging technologies.

The four-day event also featured the inaugural Singapore Defense Tech Hackathon, where about 300 engineers, operators and founders developed working solutions for real-world defence and security needs – with promising teams getting the opportunity to take their ideas further through the NUS Defence Venture Lab.

Drawing on research into sleep, physical activity and behavioural change, the new NUS Health programme is turning evidence into practical, sustainable habits that can make a difference over the long term. Led by researchers from NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and involving expertise from across NUS, the programme will work with 2,000 staff to better understand their health and help them optimise sleep, reduce sedentary time and increase physical activity.

And supporting wellbeing goes beyond physical health. “For us, success is defined by how well our students and alumni show up in the community and the work they do as community builders,” said Assoc Prof Huang Hoon Chng, Director, NUS Chua Thian Poh Community Leadership Centre (CTPCLC).

For 15 years, CTPCLC has helped NUS students learn about community development, working alongside social service organisations and using applied research to better understand issues on the ground.

Thrilled to have spent last Saturday morning with fellow alumni, students, colleagues and friends at Raffles Hall for this year’s Plant-It-Forward Day.

Through the Plant-It-Forward Challenge, every S$1,000 raised in support of financial aid for our NUS students will be recognised with a tree planted on our NUS campus.

Elated that, since 2022, our community has planted more than 2,000 trees across campus and raised over S$2 million for the Enhanced Financial Aid Scheme. More than numbers, these are seeds of opportunity, made possible by the generosity of our donors and champions.

There could not be a more fitting place to plant new trees. For close to 70 years, Raffles Hall has been home to generations of NUS students. Delighted that we have planted new roots here, creating shade, helping to fight climate change, and opening doors for future generations.
