A knitted sweater 🧶 and 3D-printed concrete 🧱... what's the connection?

Inspired by the interwoven structure of a knitted sweater, Assistant Professor Zhou Wen and her team developed the "concrete stitching" approach, where concrete layers are interlocked to create an interwoven pattern that enhances the overall structural performance.

The result? The design improved the performance of the printed concrete in the weakest direction. The toughness of the stitched design increased by over 340%.

An idea from everyday life, reimagined to inspire innovations in engineering. 💡
