It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Oreo, fondly known to many as Tamu, on Thursday, 30 October 2025. He spent his final years under the loving care of Prof Hill, who shared this touching remembrance of his life below.
“Tamu was once a familiar sight around Hall 4 until a stray dog attack in 2013 left him badly injured. Thanks to the incredible care from CMN, he recovered and made Nanyang Heights and Nanyang View his home. He was a charming flirt, often seen lying in the road, coaxing passers-by for cuddles. He walked with a limp ever since the attack, but was always happy and cheerful — a truly strong and brave cat.
For reasons best known to himself, he later decided to move into my house. After some resistance (on my part), he managed to make himself at home and soon became king of the household. He woke us every morning for breakfast and greeted us at the door after work with a wagging tail as if he thought he was a dog.
Despite his bold personality, he had a gentle side. He was intuitive to people being sick or needing comfort and would become especially attentive to them. He loved kibbles, was obsessed with fresh water and even enjoyed taking showers, shouting until the tap was opened for him. Amazingly, when his kidney function was tested a year ago, he still had perfect kidneys!
He passed peacefully in my lap, on his favourite chair on our balcony. He had developed bad arthritis, made worse by his long-term injuries and old-age issues. In his later years, he spent his days sitting on the balcony, watching birds and squirrels, and occasionally scolding noisy hornbills who disturbed his rest. He was around 17-18 years old when he passed.
Tamu was the best kind of cat, deeply loved and giving just as much love back.”
Oreo (Tamu) will be dearly missed and remembered as a brave, loving and charismatic boy who brought warmth to everyone who knew him. His items were donated to CMN in hope they will continue to help other campus cats. May you rest peacefully, sweet Oreo (Tamu), watching over us from your favourite balcony chair, surrounded by sunshine, birds and endless cuddles. ❤️🌈
