Indonesia is one of the world’s most ethnically and religiously diverse nations. The national motto “Bhinneka Tunggal Ika” or “Unity in Diversity” is often said to be deeply rooted in Indonesian cultures, expressing the aspirations of the Indonesian people in their efforts to build a just and prosperous society. Twenty years ago, Indonesians of all religious and ethnic backgrounds stood shoulder to shoulder in the struggle for democratic reform. The maintenance this spirit of tolerance and pluralism is key to the success of these continuing efforts.
The democratic transition of 1998 and the decentralization of authority that followed it have presented challenges and opportunities for developing pluralist policies and practices at national, regional and local and grass roots levels. The growth of ethically and religiously exclusivist movements is one the major problems facing Indonesia as the reformation era moves into its third decade.
In today’s event, we explore efforts by Indonesia’s two largest Muslim organizations, and to build pluralism, tolerance and counter the efforts of those who oppose it. These are Muhammadiyah’s Islam Kemajuan (Progressive Islam) and NU’s Islam Nusantra (Archipelagic Islam). Leaders of both organizations have described them as complimentary.
We are fortunate to have renowned speakers, daughter of Indonesian former President Abdurrahman Wahid or better known as , Mba and respected former Head of Muhammadiyah . The opening words will be delivered by an Anthropologist, Professor Mark Woodward from Center for the Study of Religion and Conflict from Arizona State University. The session will be Chaired by , CEO/Founder of .
In this dialogue, we consider the ways in which this complementarity can contribute to the consolidation of pluralism and cooperation between two of the world’s largest and most influential Muslim movements. I look forward to have a robust discussion in this fully subscribed event. Matur nuwun. 🙏 ~ Hani
