The UNESCO Chair in Interpretation and Education for Enhancing Integrated Heritage Approaches has been established in August 2021 at the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Primorska in partnership with the Škocjan Caves Park. The guiding principles of the Chair relate to participatory and “values-based” and “people-centred” approaches that help to achieve integrated and sustainable managem

ent of both natural and cultural heritage through community involvement. It is attained by the educational and research activities of the Chair that are held in cooperation with various regional, national and international institutions and promote inclusive approach to the management of cultural and natural heritage of different scales.

📅On 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐲, 𝐉𝐚𝐧𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝟏𝟐, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔, as part of the course 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 (Heritage Tourism program at UP FHŠ & UPFTŠ and Archaeological Heritage of Europe and the Mediterranean at UP FHŠ), we hosted 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐞 Slovenian experts in the field of world heritage and conservation. 𝐓𝐨𝐦𝐚ž Š𝐭𝐨𝐤𝐚, 𝐊𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐚 𝐎𝐝𝐥𝐚𝐳𝐞𝐤, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐣𝐚 𝐊𝐚𝐯č𝐢č presented a 𝐭𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞 and the 𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐮𝐚𝐥, offering valuable insights into contemporary heritage protection and management practices.

The 𝐔𝐍𝐄𝐒𝐂𝐎 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐫, based at the 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐇𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐤𝐚, participates in the faculty's pedagogical process in 𝟏𝐬𝐭, 𝟐𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝟑𝐫𝐝 𝐜𝐲𝐜𝐥𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐲 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐬, and is also involved in numerous 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬. Its members are actively involved in the 𝐓𝟒𝐄𝐔 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭, especially in WP4 and WP7, where they lead the 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐋𝐚𝐛 𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞.

Each year the Chair organizes 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞, attracting students and young professionals from around the world. The chairholder represents all 𝐒𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐔𝐍𝐄𝐒𝐂𝐎 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐬 within the 𝐒𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐔𝐍𝐄𝐒𝐂𝐎, and the Chair currently also serves as their coordinator.

In the new mandate, the UNESCO Chair will continue to deliver its 𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐥-𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬, while further expanding its network through collaboration with other 𝐔𝐍𝐄𝐒𝐂𝐎 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐬, 𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝𝐰𝐢𝐝𝐞, as well as with the 𝐔𝐍𝐄𝐒𝐂𝐎 𝐎𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐕𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐞, our traditional partner. The third annual 𝐄-𝐑𝐈𝐇𝐒.𝐬𝐢 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 – the central national event in the field of heritage science – took place on 𝟏𝟖–𝟏𝟗 𝐍𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓, hosted by the 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐤𝐚, 𝐅𝐚𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐇𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬. This year’s conference was held at 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐑𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐂𝐨𝐄 𝐢𝐧 𝐈𝐳𝐨𝐥𝐚. The event was co-organized by the representatives of the 𝐔𝐍𝐄𝐒𝐂𝐎 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐫, Assoc. Prof. 𝗭𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗮 𝗠𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘂𝘀𝗻𝗶𝗰́ and Assist. Prof. 𝐍𝐞ž𝐚 Č𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐨𝐧 𝐋𝐢𝐩𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐜, and was joined by the chairholder, Prof. 𝐈𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐚 𝐋𝐚𝐳𝐚𝐫.

The authors of the exhibition, restorer 𝐌𝐢𝐡𝐚 𝐏𝐢𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭 𝐉𝐫. (National Gallery) and 𝐃𝐫. 𝐉𝐚𝐧 𝐂𝐢𝐠𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐜̌𝐤𝐢 (University of Ljubljana), will present fascinating archival material related to the Nubian campaign, highlighting the significance of Yugoslav and Slovenian participation in this preservation effort.

The lecture will also explore numerous archaeological sites where artifacts from the campaign were found, and where the Slovenian expedition, led by Miha Pirnat, carried out its work.

Between September 4 and 5, 2025, the University of Primorska was a hub for researchers from various disciplines, brought together by the question: What role does heritage play in today's rapidly changing world, where we are witnessing constant changes in climate, society, and politics?

Both doctoral students and young researchers gathered in Koper at the Faculty of Humanities for a networking event organized by the 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦4𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞. They have exchanged experiences, working methods, and in mutual dialogue explored ideas for future cooperation.

The event was organized and led by:

Together, they sought synergies in interactive workshops that encouraged lively and active participation and discussion.

🎤On the first day, the event coincided with the 𝗧𝟰𝗘𝗨 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝗳𝗲́ on the topic of 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲.
Critical heritage studies today are primarily devoted to the analysis of discursive practices of defining and using heritage — i.e. the constant reflection and redefinition of cultural values by various factors. Assist. Prof. Neža Čebron Lipovec (UP FHŠ), together with Prof. Daniela Koleva (University of Sofia), led a discussion on views of heritage in the post-socialist era.
