Our guest speaker, Dr. William Linz, a visiting assistant professor at the University of Memphis, will present “Hypergraph Turán problems in the (j, p)-norm.”

Yesterday, June 30, 2026, marked the end of an era as we celebrated the retirement of Dr. Talmage "James" Reid.

For 38 years, Dr. Reid dedicated himself to teaching, advising, and mentoring countless students. His unwavering commitment to his students, colleagues, and the University has left a lasting impact that will not be forgotten.

We will miss seeing you on your daily walks across campus and through the third floor of Hume Hall, where your presence became a familiar and welcome part of our days.

Thank you, Dr. Reid, for your 38 years of faithful service, your wisdom, your guidance, and the difference you have made in the lives of so many. You leave behind an incredible legacy, and while you will be greatly missed, we wish you every happiness and blessing in your well-deserved retirement.

Yesterday marked the end of an era as we celebrated the retirement of one of our beloved faculty members, Julie Jones.

Julie, thank you for the countless lives you have touched throughout your years of teaching. Your students admired your unique teaching style, and your colleagues cherished your quick wit, wonderful sense of humor, and the joy you brought to those around you.

Thank you for teaching so many of us, inspiring generations of students, and leaving a lasting legacy within our department. You will be deeply missed, but your impact will continue to be felt for years to come.

Wishing you every happiness and blessing as you begin this well-earned new chapter.

Dr. Talmage James Reid will be officially retiring at the end of June. Please show him some love and provide some memories of how you met Dr. Reid. The University of Mississippi Libraries is hosting a free Python programming workshop for UM staff, faculty, and students on Tuesday, May 12th, Wednesday, May 13th, and Thursday, May 14th.

The three half-day (8:30 AM - 12:00 PM) workshop series will cover data analysis, visualization, and machine learning in Python, focusing particularly on the pandas library. Prior beginner experience with Python is required to participate in the sessions. Participants are expected to know how to assign & call variables, print text, identify and work with common data types (string, float, integer, Boolean, none, etc.) and call a function. The guest speaker will be Yongli Sang, a former 2017 graduate student and now an Associate Professor of Mathematics (Statistics) at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.

The guest speaker will be Shaohui Wang, a former 2016 graduate student and now an Associate Professor, holder of BOR Carolyn Adams Dawson Professorship in Mathematics at Louisiana Christian University.

Graduate students are encouraged to attend.

There will be a Combinatorics Seminar held on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, in Hume Hall, Room 321 from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm.

The guest speaker is Zi-Xia Song, Professor of the Department of Mathematics from the University of Central Florida. Dr. Song is also the Associate Editor for Discrete Mathematics, a peer-reviewed journal in Mathematics.
