Turkish, with an origin extending to the oldest times of history and with more than 200 million speakers in a wide geography, is a very rich world language in terms of vocabulary and eloquence. Thus, a learner of Turkish will meet with a very rich culture that arises around this language and will have the key for other branches of Turkish spoken in a wide geography as well. The main establishment
objective of Ankara University Turkish and Foreign Language Teaching, Research and Implementation Center TÖMER is teaching Turkish in Turkey as a foreign language, teaching Turkish for Turks abroad as mother language, and therefore introducing Turkey and the Turkish culture. Also, among the objectives of TÖMER are preparing schedules and developing methods about teaching Turkish as a foreign language and mother language, participating in scientific researches based on cooperation with various institutions and organizations in Turkey and abroad. TÖMER Turkish Unit approaches teaching of Turkish as a foreign language in a scientific manner and has an experienced and dynamic staff comprising experts in methods for teaching a foreign language, some of which have master and doctorate degrees. The classes are held in classrooms equipped with all kinds of audiovisual equipments and decorated with “U” shaped table system for 5 to 16 students. Turkish courses are held as intensive courses of 80 hours, regular courses of one month and 96 hours and for periods of two months. Students completing the Elementary Turkish II course get A1 certificate, students completing the Elementary Turkish IV course get A2 certificate, those completing the Intermediate Turkish IV course get B1 certificate, those completing the Upper-Intermediate Turkish II course get B2 certificate; and students completing the Upper-Intermediate Turkish IV course are honored a diploma (C1 certificate) approved by Ankara University Rectorship. Students of Elementary Turkish I, Elementary Turkish II, Intermediate Turkish I, Intermediate Turkish III, Upper-Intermediate Turkish I and Upper-Intermediate Turkish III levels, which do not correspond to any ELP (European Language Portfolio) certificate level may pass to the subsequent level in accordance with performance evaluation criteria provided by the instructor throughout the level. Students, who are evaluated as insufficient for the next level by their instructor may attend the final level exam and may continue to the next level if they pass it.
