【 No.63】沈浸雨都生活 No.63

Keelung is a vibrant port city, full of good food and friendly locals.
基隆是一座充滿活力的港口城市，擁有美味的食物和熱情的在地人。

It is surrounded by mountains and the ocean, making it easy to connect with nature. One of my favourite moments was visiting the Zhengbin Fishing Port and the Heping Island Geopark. Both places were beautiful and it surprised me how easy it was to get there. The geopark had unique rock formations and natural swimming pools. While the pools weren’t open for swimming since it was winter, I imagine they must be so much fun in the summer.

這裡依山傍海，讓人能輕易地與大自然連結。我最喜歡的時光之一，就是造訪正濱漁港和和平島地質公園。這兩個地方都非常美，而且交通比我想像中還要便利。和平島公園裡有獨特的海蝕地貌和天然泳池。雖然因為冬天沒有開放游泳，但我完全可以想像夏天在這裡玩水會有多快樂！

Another highlight was getting to interact with locals as well as other workawayers. Everyone was always very friendly and open. I loved learning about Keelung’s history and culture from chatting to locals and hearing their stories. While Keelung may be known as the Rainy City, it is a city full of life and living here was an adventure.

另一個亮點是能與當地人以及其他換宿夥伴互動。每個人都非常友善且開放，我特別喜歡透過與在地人聊天、聆聽他們的故事，來深入了解基隆的歷史與文化。雖然基隆以「雨都」聞名，但它其實是一座充滿生命力的城市，在這裡生活本身就是一場冒險。

Who Keeps the Spirits Alive in Keelung? 🕯️✨

If you’ve ever experienced the Keelung Ghost Festival (中元祭), you know it’s more than just a ceremony—it’s a breathtaking spectacle of lights, parades, and deep-rooted respect for the past. But have you ever wondered who stands behind these century-old traditions?

We’re diving deep into the story of the Lin Family Clan Association (林姓宗親會).

For nearly two centuries, they haven't just been preserving a festival; they’ve been guarding the very soul of Keelung. From the magnificent "Main Altar" (主普壇) to the meticulous rituals that welcome the spirits, the Lin family plays a pivotal role in this UNESCO-recognized heritage.

What makes their story so special?
🏮 The Power of Clan Unity: In early Keelung, clans moved from conflict to cooperation, creating the "Blood-Pooling" tradition that defines our city's peace.
🤝 Generational Handover: It’s moving to see how the younger generation is stepping up to carry the lantern, blending modern management with ancient beliefs.

Hey, I’m Kaja, and I spent two weeks volunteering in Keelung 🍀

This city is full of hidden corners just waiting to be explored - through vibrant streets, bustling markets, and of course way too many delicious snacks. What made it really special was becoming part of this amazing community and getting to know the locals, who were unbelievably kind.

這座城市處處藏著驚喜，正等著你去挖掘——無論是充滿活力的街道、熱鬧的市場，當然還有多到數不完的美味小吃。但真正讓這段旅程與眾不同的是，我成為了這個超棒社群的一份子，並認識了這群難以置信地友善的在地人。

感官體驗基隆的獨特 Explore Keelung with 4 senses: City of the unexpected
對待期待的好方法是——別有太多期待，讓驚喜自然而然地發生。這正是我第一次來基隆時的心態。我只知道這座城市位於北部，靠近台北，臨近海邊，僅此而已。若不是抵達台灣當天在這裡有個工作度假，我大概不會來到這裡——現在想來，真慶幸當時來了！

This is how it works with expectations – have none and let surprise do its job. This is exactly what I was doing when I first came to Keelung. I only knew that the city is close to Taipei in the North, situated on the water. That’s it. If I hadn’t had a workation here the day I arrived in Taiwan, I probably would not even have come – how thankful I am I did!

在這個很在地的小城市待上兩週，真的是一種很難得的幸運。
Spending two weeks in this very local town was such a blessing.

在基隆，你幾乎可以找到各種你想要的生活樣貌——距離熱鬧的台北只要 40 分鐘，但同時也擁有壯麗的自然景色，可以隨時去爬山，看見令人驚豔的風景；還有我去過最美的夜市之一，滿滿各式各樣的美食與飲料。港口每天都有國際郵輪停靠，帶來來自世界各地的旅人，讓這座城市一直保持著流動與活力。

Here you can find anything you like, the hustle and bustle of the capital just 40 minutes away, stunning nature where you can go for a hike and you’ll see amazing landscapes, one of the most beautiful night markets and so much variety of good food and drinks, a harbour where everyday international cruise dock to let the visitors explore the surroundings and a lot more.

但對我來說，最喜歡的還是這裡的人。大家都非常親切、也很樂於幫忙，讓人在這裡生活感到很安心。
What I liked the most though were the local people which were extremely kind and willing to help if you needed anything.

我真的很推薦每一位旅人，來到這個低調卻迷人的城市——基隆。

散步基隆街頭藝術：9大藝術景點自助漫遊指南
A Street Art Stroll Through Keelung: A Self-Guided Walking Tour

基隆以雨、海鮮和熱鬧的港口聞名，但在市場、巷弄和山坡階梯之間，其實還隱藏著城市的另一面：街頭藝術。基隆是一座充滿色彩的城市，最好的證明，就是散落在意想不到的角落的那些俏皮插畫與藝術作品，把城市變成一個個迷你戶外藝廊。

這篇文章整理了基隆市區最容易抵達的幾幅彩繪牆，共9個景點，文末也提供建議路線與地圖。多數作品並未標示名稱或創作者，因此我自行取名方便辨識和說明。整條路線一小時內即可完成——非常適合攝影愛好者、家族旅行，或想探索主流景點之外的好奇旅人。

Keelung is known for rain, seafood, and a lively port—but tucked between markets, alleys, and hillside stairways is another side of the city: street art. Keelung is a city of color, as you can read about in this previous blog post, and to prove it, playful illustrations and art pieces have transformed unexpected corners into miniature outdoor galleries.

This blog post highlights some of the most accessible murals in downtown Keelung and includes a suggested itinerary with a map at the end. I have taken the liberty to name the pieces for ease of identification; unfortunately, most of the artworks are not labeled with titles or the names of their creators. The full route can be completed in under an hour—perfect for photographers, families, or curious travelers looking to explore beyond the main tourist spots.

🇵🇪 秘魯文化小筆記：從印加文明到舌尖上的驚奇
Peru Culture Notes: From Incan Civilization to Culinary Wonders

我們跨越半個地球來到秘魯。首先是讓人敬畏的安地斯山脈，海拔從 3942 公尺一路攀升至 6768 公尺，這裡不只是羊駝與馬鈴薯的故鄉，更憑藉多樣的美食，在 2026 TasteAtlas Awards 奪下亮眼成績。
We’ve traveled halfway across the globe to Peru! Our journey began with the awe-inspiring Andes, where altitudes soar from 3,942 to 6,768 meters. This region is not only the ancestral home of llamas and potatoes but also a culinary powerhouse, having just earned top honors at the 2026 TasteAtlas Awards.

從最初散佈在海岸、南部與山區的印加原住民與小型部落，到 1492 年哥倫布發現新大陸後，帶來的殖民轉折與淘金歷史。The story of Peru is one of deep layers—from the original Incan natives and diverse ethnic groups scattered across the coasts and highlands, to the pivotal historical shift following Columbus's arrival in 1492 and the era of the Spanish conquest.

最吸睛的絕對是白羊雜湯（White Soup of Sheep）和特殊的脫水馬鈴薯（Chuño），還有讓人大開眼界的 Suri（黃金象鼻蟲幼蟲）。
The real showstoppers were the unique local delicacies: the hearty White Sheep Soup, the traditional dehydrated potatoes known as Chuño, and the truly eye-opening Suri (palm weevil larvae).

【 No.60】沈浸雨都生活 No.60

一開始其實不知道會遇見什麼，但很慶幸我來了。
I honestly didn’t know what to expect when I came to Keelung for my first-ever work exchange, but I’m so glad I did.

這是我第一次參加換宿計畫，也是第一次來到基隆。兩週的時間裡，我認識了很多很棒的人，吃了好多好吃的食物，也慢慢看見這座城市不一樣的樣子，還有台灣自然風景的美。
參加了兩場走讀導覽、也體驗了實境解謎遊戲，讓我走進那些原本可能不會自己發現的地方。夜市更是完全超出我的期待，選擇多又好吃（滷肉飯是我最喜歡的！）。

交通也很方便，讓我可以和其他志工一起去台北、九份、北投走走看看。
希望有一天，還能再回到這個地方。

During these two weeks, I met amazing people, ate incredible food, and got to explore not only Keelung and its hidden gems, but also Taiwan’s natural beauty.
Joining the walking tours and playing the treasure hunt really helped me discover parts of the city I probably wouldn’t have found on my own. The night market exceeded all my expectations—with so many options and everything tasting so good (braised pork rice is definitely my favorite).

Public transportation was also very convenient, making it easy to visit Taipei, Jiufen, and Beitou with other volunteers.
I hope to come back to this amazing place one day.
