Topic:
Cascading Land Surface Hazards as a Nexus in the Earth System: Lessons from Taiwan and Abroad
Abstract:
Extreme events such as earthquakes, typhoons, and wildfires trigger cascading land surface hazards that connect Earth systems across space and time. Landslides, debris flows, floods, and sediment pulses form linked chains that reshape landscapes, disrupt ecosystems, and threaten infrastructure long after the initial trigger. In Taiwan, we quantify the magnitude of river aggradation following Typhoon Morakot and the 2024 Hualien Earthquake using aerial and drone imagery. These data reveal meters of channel aggradation that expanded flood inundation zones and altered long-term hazard exposure. Such post-event changes highlight how hazard cascades propagate beyond the initiating trigger, extending societal impacts over years to decades. By comparing Taiwan with other tectonically active, storm-prone regions, I illustrate both the general principles of cascading hazards and the local controls that influence their emergence. These lessons underscore the need for integrated, cross-disciplinary approaches to hazard science and resilience.
