Once upon a time,
When women were birds,
There was the simple understanding
That to sing at dawn
And to sing at dusk
Was to heal the world through joy.
The birds still remember what we have forgotten,
That the world is meant to be celebrated.

- Terry Tempest Williams, When Women Were Birds

The bluebonnet is the state flower of Texas. Texans love the bluebonnet so much that it was named the state flower. The more you look at a bluebonnet, the more you see. Can you think of creative ways to describe the bluebonnet?

Poem for the day (Hint: William Wordsworth loved daffodils.):
The Daffodils

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o’er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle in the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced; but they
Outdid the sparkling waves in glee;
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company;
I gazed – and gazed – but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood,
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.

William Wordsworth

And because it is that day after all...

We're excited to announce that Lockhart State Park is the official home of the State Jackalope Herd. After decades of careful conservation, we're ready to share these symbols of Texas heritage with the public.

These iconic creatures have been carefully preserved, with genetic links identical to the jackalope first encountered by early settlers. Historic Lockhart State Park was chosen to serve as the initial home for the herd due to its ideal ecosystem and proximity to biologists in Austin.

Eventually, the agency hopes to expand the project, by placing additional stock in other parks around the state. The Jackalope Herd joins the list of other state herds managed by Texas State Parks, including the State Bison Herd and State Longhorn Herd.

We can hardly wait! Next Thursday Mark Bristol will be in the library for the Knox-Bennett Writer series.

A Mighty Girl

Happy Women's History Month! At A Mighty Girl, we take pride in highlighting women, girls, and their remarkable accomplishments year-round, but this special month provides a wonderful opportunity to show the broader community why it's so important for both girls and boys to learn about women's contributions to history. To do so, all during this month, we'll continue to share the stories of girls and women throughout history and around the world, with special attention to lesser-known but equally amazing women whose stories have too often been consigned to the footnotes of history books.

Our Mighty Girls of today will be our history makers of tomorrow. We can’t wait to see all that they will do and create and be. In the meantime, it is our honor to inspire them with the stories of the girls and women who came before them.

If you'd like to find books about inspiring women in history to share with children and teens this month, A Mighty Girl features the world's largest women's history collection for young readers. To browse our collection of over 700 titles -- which is sortable by recommended reader age and area of specialization using the left menu filters -- visit our "Biography" section at https://www.amightygirl.com/books/history-biography/biography

If you'd like to view our full selection of both history and historical fiction about girls and women, featuring more than 1,000 books for children and teens, visit our "History & Biography" section at https://www.amightygirl.com/books/history-biography

Texas Independence Day and something extra!

Today is not only Texas Independence Day but also Sam Houston's birthday. Sam was born on March 2, 1793. I've posted many photos of Sam over the years but this is probably my favorite 😀
