We are so blessed to have Ramonica on our Faculty at ACU!

We are so blessed to have Ramonica on our Faculty at ACU!

Happy Tuesday everyone!! Allow me to introduce our feature for today: Ramonica Scott, MS, LAT, ATC

Ramonica received her bachelor of science in athletic training from the University of Tulsa. She went on to obtain her master of science degree in Health and Human Performance from Northwestern State University of Louisiana. She is currently at Texas Tech University Heath Sciences Center pursuing her PhD in Rehabilitation Sciences.

After finishing her master’s degree she began working as an athletic trainer and instructor for the athletic training education program at Henderson State University. Since then, Ramonica worked as an athletic trainer at high schools in West Texas while completing a PhD degree at the TTUHSC. Ramonica served as a clinical education coordinator for the Athletic Training Program at Frostburg State University. Currently, she is a clinical immersive experience coordinator and faculty member in the Master of Athletic Training program at Abilene Christian University.

When asked about culturally competent care and ethnic diversity in AT, Ramonica had these words to share:

While covering a track practice for a fellow athletic trainer, I had the opportunity to work with a young man from Kenya. He came into the athletic training facility to have his knee examined. He was hesitant to allow me to do the evaluation and I realized that in his culture, it was a possibility that women were not in health care roles. I took the time to explain the examination that I was going to perform, and I reassured him that I had the skill to efficiently examine his knee. He eventually felt comfortable with me examining his knee. I purposely share this story with my students to show them the value of cultural competence.

Many times throughout my career, from being an athletic training student to my current position as a MAT faculty member, I was the only person of color in the room. I felt a responsibility to my culture and my people to represent myself in the most professional manner and be the voice that gets our opinions and ideas heard. As I get to know my students, I make sure that I share my thoughts on this responsibility and how important it is to get our voices heard.

Our second year students spent the last few days at the SWATA Competency Workshop. They were able to take a mock BOC exam (150 questions, 4 hour time limit), learn a few new techniques for practice, and network with other young professionals. Special thanks to Texas State Athletic Training for hosting us! @ Texas State University

Athletic Trainers: Maybe you’ve heard of us, but do you really know what we do?

Athletic Training began as a way to make playing sports safer, but also to help save young athletes lives. In recent news, it has also been found that Athletic Trainers are not only saving the lives of athletes but their fans as well.

If ever you wanted to see an Achilles tendon snap in slo-mo! 😲

The optimal treatment for every individual patient with an Achilles tendon rupture is still unknown, and many find this injury difficult to rehab 🧩🏋

Here's a GREAT blog covering the different Rehabilitation phases after an Achilles tendon rupture 👇 A must-read!

ANGEL TREE GIFTS FROM THE US EMBASSY...

Today, our Rescue Shelter kids welcomed a family representing the US Embassy in Kyiv. Each year, the US Embassy does an "Angel Tree" and provides gifts for children in need. About a month ago, we began working with a friend at the US Embassy and embassy employees were asked to consider sponsoring one of our kids Christmas wishes. We are grateful to the families who donated the gifts and to the Susan Weisser Schmitt family for coming today and delivering it all.

Of course, all the children were delighted with the gifts they received. The smiles on their faces and the joy of new toys, which for a while will help to ease the painful life circumstances in which the children find themselves.

THANK YOU to the US Embassy!
