Racial Wholeness Pathway — Siburt Institute for Church Ministry

"Are societal pressures and a divisive climate drowning out the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s message of nonviolence in the face of oppression? Escalating racial, political, and religious polarizations in America require Christians to be as clear as possible about what their biblical response should be regarding acts of civil violence against their neighbors."

#tbt to this 2018 presentation by Dr. Jennifer Shewmaker on “Social Media and Identity: Developing Wholeness in a Connected World." Are we using social media as a tool of renewal or a tool of destruction? As we now depend more on digital communication than ever before, take a listen to this presentation from our archives.

Young adults, teens and tweens are highly engaged with social media. They use it to construct and share their own identity while navigating social relationships. This session will explore the challenges and opportunities social media presents, and strategies for helping young people navigate its use...

Seeking the Kingdom Not Just the Church - Discover the Adventure of Seeking First His Kingdom

At Summit 2013, Terry Cagle reminds us that people – not the four walls of a church building – are the crucial agents in making God's kingdom. In this time of online church services and Zoom Bible studies, Terry's words remain inspiring and relevant as we seek the kingdom – distanced yet together. #tbt

How do we live out the Kingdom? Stories, observations and learnings are discovered in the context of a fun and funky bunch of ragamuffins striving to be the church.

On Death, COVID 19, and Easter | “COVID-19 has pressed death back into our consciousness. The numbers are staggering. Thousands have died. And more will. Despite what we know to be true, we live as though we are immortal. This virus tells us otherwise. In a moment when we see death all around us, may we remember that though death still has something to say, death will not have the last word.”

Bringing the Generations Back Together (audio) — Summit at Abilene Christian University

How can we bring the generations back together in our churches? More importantly, why should we? Listen in on this pathway, which looks to Scripture, theology, sociology, and practical experience to explore these questions.

Churches that want to become more intentionally intergenerational typically raise two questions. The first: “How can we bring the generations back together?” The second and even more important: “Why?” What is the evidence that intergenerational approaches are beneficial? This pathway explore...

Biblical Storytelling (audio) — Summit at Abilene Christian University

In these recordings, we have opportunities to hear stories from Scripture, learn to tell stories ourselves, and dream about ways that our churches can experience this unique encounter with God’s Word.

Hearing Scripture told to us offers a vastly different encounter than reading it silently to ourselves (or even hearing it read aloud). It’s an experience that blesses both hearers and tellers, and the inherently relational experience builds community and deepens intimacy. In this pathway, we have...

Songs of Sorrow, Songs of Joy: Seeking Racial Unity and Justice (audio) — Summit at Abilene Christian University

W. E. B. Du Bois called the slave spirituals “Sorrow Songs,” but he found more than sorrow in their rhythm and rhyme. These songs reveal a tension between sorrow and joy, death and life, despair and hope. That same tension permeates the story of race relations and pursuit of justice, healing, and unity in American Christianity. Join us in exploring challenges and opportunities in this vital work.

There are 150 psalms in the canon of Scripture; 150 songs to the Lord. And yet, the church is a living, breathing example that our song to the Lord continues. How does a congregation live – or “sing” – in the midst of sorrow, hope, and joy? Centered on worship ministry, this pathway provides some conversations about leading in crisis, as well as practical tips on developing young leaders, leading in multicultural settings, and working with teams.

Christian Faith and the Future of Work (audio) — Summit at Abilene Christian University

New recordings! How might Christians engage the changing dynamics of work? In what ways do gender, race, social location, and the American work ethic affect our career path and development? This pathway discusses ways Christians might engage the changing landscape of work with greater compassion, curiosity, and imagination.

The certainty, longevity, and predictability workers once felt no longer exist as technological advances, the economy, and shifting social and economic realities contribute to an unsettling and unpredictable experience. How might Christians engage these changing dynamics? In what ways do gender, rac

Growing Young (audio) — Summit at Abilene Christian University

"I loved how the morning classes were geared toward a theoretical understanding of the material and the afternoon sessions built on that foundation by presenting practical ways some churches have implemented Growing Young. In our most recent staff meeting we processed our time at Summit and are now putting into practice some of the things that we learned."

—Byron Fike, Clear Lake Church of Christ

For more than 30 years, traditional models of youth ministry have leaned toward tendencies that fail to consistently invite young people to lifelong service in the body of Christ. Recently, the Fuller Youth Institute researched congregations that have discovered effective ways for inviting young peo

Spirit Shake-Up (audio) — Summit at Abilene Christian University

“My ministry partner and I were abundantly blessed by attending Dr. Leonard Allen and Dr. Lauren White’s sessions in the Holy Spirit pathway at the recent ACU Summit 2019. Their insights to the working of the Holy Spirit in our lives as well as new knowledge of the historical significance of the Holy Spirit's outpouring in 1801 during Barton Stone’s Cane Ridge Revival, gave us fresh vision into the unifying work of the Spirit across our Christian traditions.”

—Dee Halbert, Abilene Holy Family Catholic Church

The Holy Spirit is no tame Spirit. When the people of God grow comfortable, satisfied, and sleepy, when the call of God’s mission to the whole world recedes, the tendency of the Spirit is to shake up the church and dislodge it from its ease and self-satisfaction. This shake-up is happening to many...

General information

The national influence of Abilene Christian University’s annual Lectureship began more than 100 years ago. In 2009, this annual Lectureship program dawned the new name “Summit.” Summit provides a space for conversation about real world issues discussed from the perspective of faith. Summit gathers students, church leaders, faculty and Christianity for conversation. Our aim is that participation in this event will challenge you to see life as ministry and equip you to live as a minister in your everyday life. Together we participate with God in His mission for the world. We hope you leave Summit even more committed to following Jesus. Through this conversation, our prayer is that Christ will be seen more plainly in our neighborhoods, office break rooms, community service and churches.
