Please check your ECU email for the three scholarships: Nisha Karki, Ada Rotary and Judith Whomble.
Make sure you start working early on these scholarship applications. Get someone to proofread your essays and resumes. Look for strong recommendation letters. Do not turn in incomplete applications as they will not be considered. Good luck.

I lit a single diya on Diwali eve for the remembrance of all the loved ones who had passed away. One of those included in my prayers was a young, intelligent, caring, and always smiling young lady Nisha Karki from Nepal. I clearly remember the three in the morning, November 16th, 1916 call from the president of ASA which shook me to the core. I went into crisis control mode, meeting with the ECU president, ASA executives, police and counselors. The next few days was rough to say the least as I dealt with 100s of grieving students, prayer meetings, funeral arrangements, fundraising activities, and flights to send Nisha home to her grieving mother. I couldn’t have done all these without the help of our ASA executives, friends of Nisha and members of the Nepalese community. As always we had excellent student leaders who stepped up and did what needed to be done.

It has been almost 3 years since we lost our dear Nisha. Our pledge was to raise $10,000, have an endowed scholarship by her 3rd year death anniversary, November 16th. Right now we have $6000 in Nisha Karki Scholarship Fund and may have another $15000-$2000 from our Diwali function last week. We are getting closer!

I received a surprise call from one of our past presidents on Diwali eve and and he told me that he would make sure that this Scholarship is going to be endowed by Nov 16. Next year on Asian Night we will announce our first recipient of Nisha Karki Scholarship! I sincerely think my special prayer has been answered!

So I am calling all our ASA alums who are in the workforce to please help us get to this $10, 000 amount by November 16th! Call the ECU Foundation at 580 559 5655 and donate to Nisha Karki Scholarship Fund. We can do it! Thank you all! Love working with my kiddos! Love you all.

We have a really exciting news today. A Nepalese professor: Sanjiv Kumar Jha, is expected to join the Physics department at East Central University starting Fall of 2018. I just came across this information from his brother, one of ISCC active volunteer and graduating senior this semester: Saurav Prasain. Dr. Jha is currently working as a Physics Professor at Samford University, Birmingham, Alabama. He got his Phd from New Mexico State University and specializes in the field of condensed matter physics/materials science. It is very interesting to know that he will be bringing a decade of technical expertise to our physics department and ECU campus. International Student Connection Club will like to welcome and wish him best of luck.

Here are some tips for those who are attending ECU this fall semester. It may be important for you.. check it out.
Targeted for incoming freshmen (Fall 2017)
 Flights and Travel
1. Make sure to confirm your ticket ASAP. (After your visa is confirmed). The air fare is getting higher day by day.
2. Be aware on your dietary restrictions in plane, scheduled time, layovers, transit and other flight details. It is better to share your flight details with your family member and the person who will receive you in United States. Save a copy of your ticket in your phone and let your family member know where you reach.
3. You may need some cash in your hand to spend on food and drinks, cab and so on. If you have transit in European countries, I suggest to keep some euros as well.
4. Be aware of the luggage weight. Most flights allows two luggage of 23 KG each, 7 KG hand carry and a laptop bag*. It might cost you expensive for overweight.
5. Be careful to keep the important documents like Passport, I-20, and Plane ticket in such a way that you can take it out immediately if somebody ask for.
6. Keep in mind about your scheduled time. If you have got like 2-3 hours of layover, it is better not to hang around the airport.
7. Officers and police may ask you different questions in different place. It is normal. Take it easy and answer it honestly and politely.
8. Be aware not to keep meat, fruits, and drinks and illegal items in your luggage. You might get trouble otherwise. If you wish to bring some pickles, dry meat etc., make sure you seal it with a label on it including the expiry date.
9. It is better to be in comfortable dress according to the weather. You have to spend 30-45 hours like that way normally*.
 Shopping
1. Bring some basic clothes you need. Shirts, Pants, t-shirts, vest, under wears, towels, socks, shoes etc. Do not carry a lot. Just 3/4 pair of clothes is fine. The price is not so different. You can buy more here.
2. Carry daily use materials like toothpaste, toothbrush, shaving machine, deodorants, and perfumes.
3. It is better to bring some traditional costumes and some traditional items. We have different cultural programs here.
4. It is better to carry a small blanket and bed-sheet.
5. Bring some educational materials you may need like pen, pencil, calculator, and couple notebooks.
6. Laptop is a very essential device you need to have. If you have a good one, you can bring that. If you are planning to buy one, I suggest to buy it in United States.
7. It is better to buy some dry foods, few noodle packets and bring it with you. You may not have rides at the time you want or you may want to eat some other times as well. It takes some time to be familiar with American foods.
8. Make sure to carry some cash in dollars. I would recommend for more than $200.
9. It is better to have a smart phone. The mobile supporting the frequency band like GSM-900, GSM-1800, EGSM, GSM-850 and GSM 1900 also works here. If you are planning to buy one, I recommend to buy it in United States.
10. If you are bringing some electronic device from Nepal like laptop, shaving machine, hair trimmer, x-box, music systems etc. make sure to get a connector for American type of port. You cannot plug your devices in electrical port here. It will cost you around $25 just for the connector. So I highly recommend you to check online about the American type of plugs.
 ECU arrangements
1. Be aware that ECU is not going to receive you in airport. So, you have to make your own arrangements. You can call your friends, relatives or rent a cab/taxi to come ECU. Renting a cab will cost you around $120. So, it is better to be in group as you can share that cost.
2. ECU dorms early check in is on August 8th from 9 am to 5 pm for the early arrival. If you cannot make it that day, you have to wait until 12th. There will be regular check in after that. However, if you arrive between 9th and 12th, you have to make your own arrangements to stay.
3. Transfer and graduate students do not need to stay in ECU dorms. So, be aware to arrange your housing off campus in time. It is getting harder to get house/apartment day by day.
4. ECU will have some volunteers between 7 and 12th. They will help you to make your student Id, Housing contract, and many more.
5. If you had attempted SAT, you have to report your SAT score to International office. If not, you have to schedule your ACT exam as soon as you arrive ECU.
6. ECU will offer freshmen orientation program and several welcome programs. I highly recommend you all to join these kind of events.
We will be always there for you if you need any help. Feel free to ask questions.
Wish you all the best! Have a safe journey. We will see you in ECU soon!!!
