Great read on trauma.

"Trauma survivors need help regulating those reactions. Yelling at people to stop feeling that way, or trying to talk them out of it does not work," says "The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma" author Dr. Bessel van der Kolk.

Experts say batterers intervention can work, reversing abusive and controlling behavior, but only if offenders complete the course. When they don’t, there is often little or no punishment.

Victim advocates say without consequences for abusers, there is no justice for victims, and abuse is more likely to recur. #dvam19

We screened Amy’s Story on Thursday in recognition of #domesticviolenceawarenessmonth. It’s the tragic account and timeline of one woman’s domestically violent relationship and death. We screen it every October and if you didn’t attend this year, hopefully you’ll attend the next screening.
1 in 3 women experience or are exposed to domestic violence. Learn the signs, there is help out there.
The Family Crisis Center is a great resource for the Ada area, and we’re so appreciative of partnering with them.

Abusers often groom friends, family, and others to overlook signs of abuse and cut ties with the victim. They strategically act charming and helpful, so people cannot imagine the cruel acts occurring behind closed doors.

“Ultimately, victims don’t report because they don’t trust anything will be done about it and that they will not be responded to appropriately. We have to keep in mind the criminal court system is a reflection of the communities that it operates in. It’s real easy to sit on the outside and say the police need to do better or the prosecutors need to do better but ultimately they can’t and they won’t if we don’t all do better. They need to believe that a jury in that community will convict.”

You can now text 911 if you need emergency help in the OKC area. It’s always better to call on the phone if you are able — so call if you can, text if you can’t.

Open a new text message, type 911 in the recipient field, type the location of your emergency and hit send. Someone will reply with instructions or questions.

This service should be particularly helpful for someone with hearing or speech impairments, or for someone who needs emergency services but can’t safely make a voice call.

Texting to 911 for an emergency in OKC will activate a response from the Oklahoma City Police Department, Oklahoma City Fire Department or EMSA OKLAHOMA. This service is in partnership with the Association of Central Oklahoma Governments, ensuring texts for emergencies will activate a response from whichever local jurisdiction is appropriate.

Since December, a group of women have attempted to gather “sex games gone wrong” defense killings under one place – the website We Can’t Consent to This. In the decade since Vicky’s murder, such killings have risen by 90%. Two thirds involve strangulation.

The first 6 weeks of the semester is considered The Red Zone. As reported in Psychology Today, research reveals that it’s during The Red Zone (from arriving on campus in August through Thanksgiving Break in November) perpetrators are most likely to sexually assault freshman students. More than 50% of campus assaults happen during this period of time, mostly between midnight and 6am on Saturday and Sunday mornings. And according to the Dept of Justice, for 90% of victims of sexual assault, the perpetrator is a friend or an acquaintance.
We all play a part in preventing sexual assault.
CARE about each other!

The Ada Police Department encourages you to download this free APP!

Noonlight is a free app to send police to your location if needed. If you are in a situation that causes you to be in fear, just open the app and place your thumb on the screen. If for some reason, your thumb comes off the screen, you have 10 seconds to enter a 4 digit PIN. If you do not enter your PIN, Noonlight will send you a text message asking what your emergency is. If you do not respond to the text, Noonlight will call your phone. If you do not answer the phone call, Noonlight will call the closest law enforcement department, give them your information and GPS coordinates.
