Meet the Staff Monday! 😁

Straight out of the depths of New York's Theatre world, delivered to the Etherredge Center just in time for things to get crazy, we have a true professional.

Emilie Belisle is the Administrative Assistant for the Etherredge Center. Emilie’s position is similar to a business manager, dealing with budgeting, paying artists, and making sure events run smoothly. Emilie started working at the Etherredge “about fifteen days before everything shut down,” and says that her experience so far has been unusual, but she is enjoying the challenge and being back on campus. “I enjoy that there is a lot around. I like the downtown area a lot, perusing the thrift shops.” Emilie’s family lives in Tennessee and she is happy she gets to see them more often than when she was living in New York. Emilie shares her former professor Paul Crook’s obsession with The Bachelor and The Bachelorette. Emilie is excited to direct Why We Like Love Stories this semester as a part of the University Theatre Player’s one acts.

We could not be more proud of our 2020 December graduates! You may have heard a familiar voice if you attended graduation!

The University of South Carolina Aiken celebrated its newest alumni during its fall convocation ceremony on Nov. 20.

"Do you realize that of the 7 billion people in the world, only 6% have completed a college degree? You did not just complete a college degree, you did so in the middle of a global pandemic," said Dr. Sandra Jordan, chancellor.

Thanks Aiken High School for letting us hold tonight's graduation on your field!

We know these kids!

Two University of South Carolina Aiken visual and performing arts students, Vanya (Kayla) Hutto and Mr. Tres (Lowell) Taylor placed first in their levels for the South Carolina National Association for Teachers of Singing (SCNATS) Musical Theater competition held Oct. 25 - 28.

Winners were announced and had their video submissions streamed live on a Facebook event on Oct. 29. According to Assistant Professor of Music and Coordinator of Vocal Studies, Dr. Keely Rhodes, these wins give the students recognition throughout the state and will move them forward into a regional competition with winners from Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina. Based upon those results they may have the opportunity to compete on the national stage.

Meet the Staff Monday! 😁

Here's a swell dude! You might know him for his limitless amount of theatre and performance factoids, or for always leaving his coffee mug behind. It's on the piano garage by way Chet.

Chet Longley is an associate professor of design and technical theatre and the technical director for the Etherredge Center and the Department of Visual and Performing ARTS at USCA. Chet teaches, supervises, and helps students design and execute ideas for the performing arts production. For shows the Etherredge Center is bringing in, Chet works with Paul Crook to ensure the incoming shows have what they need for a successful night. Chet has worked at many colleges along his career, including Wofford and Appalachian State, and says that working at USCA brings a new challenge every day. “I love that the academic programs are so interdisciplinary and so tied together. Philosophically I agree with that.” When asked about his mentors going through higher education, Chet said “Jack Benjamin has been a big part of my life.” He also cites Frank Muller, Joel Williams, Andy Gibbs, Michael Rhia and David Weiss. Chet is excited about the technological change happening in theatre that “will expand the artistic possibility and the environmental friendliness.”

Meet the Staff Monday brings you this gem! You've probably met if you've ever bought a ticket in person. Say hi the next time you're in!

Jo Anna Mitchell is the Box Office Manager for the Etherredge Center. Jo Anna is in charge of the ticketing software the Etherredge and the Department of Visual and Performing Arts at USCA uses for its events. When asked what she enjoys about working at a center for the arts, as opposed to her previous position at Augusta University Medical Center. “Its fun! The atmosphere; I love walking in in the morning and hearing the singing and creativity of everybody.”

Welcome to Meet the Staff Monday! Here we will highlight our outstanding team members who put heart, soul and years of experience into bringing our performance ambitions to life! Could you start with anyone but Teddy Palmer?

Teddy Palmer is the assistant Technical Director of the Etherredge Center. Teddy is in charge of running the shows that come through the Etherredge, as well as helping students learn technical skills needed for theatre. “Making sure the students’ experience [while at college] is an enjoyable one” is what Teddy enjoys most about his position, as well as the diversity of shows that the Etherredge brings in. One of Teddy’s favorites was Wynton Marsalis’s performance and he is excited to see his brother, Branford Marsalis, April 6th. He's something of a Jazz Fan when he's not swinging Mjölnir around.
