Thank you to all who attended the Annual Medical Student Ethics Conference last week! In addition to talks and flash presentations, an art show was held each day featuring submitted artwork from medical students across the country. Charu Jain was chosen as the winner of the first AMSEC Art Award for her piece "Inner Workings".

Charu Jain is a first-year medical student at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. She graduated from Stanford University with a degree in Fine Art and remains deeply interested in the intersections of art, healing, and human understanding, as well as the role the humanities play in enriching both physician and patient care.

Happy Friday! With AMSEC just around the corner, Dr. Gligorov gives some insight into the conference's creation.

"In 2016, I decided to organize the first Annual Medical Student Ethics Conference (AMSEC) because I realized that there was a need for a dedicated conference for medical students. In my experience teaching ethics, the most interesting and most lively sessions where those focused on medical student presentations of ethical issues as they experience them. It made it clear to me that medical students are uniquely positioned in the healthcare team because they occupy both the role of trainee and that of an individual with fiduciary responsibility toward patients. A medical student’s distinctive role requires moral responsibility but does not afford a great deal of agency, which gives rise to ethical dilemmas that are different from those experienced by physicians. I am glad to say that AMSEC, now in its ninth year, has developed into a national venue for medical students across the country to discuss their experiences and share with their peers. "
