LCPA Holds Round Robin Interviews at LSUA

The Central Louisiana Chapter of the Society of Louisiana Certified Public Accountants held Round Robin interviews recently at LSUA.

Employers from central Louisiana gathered on the LSUA campus to conduct speed interviews with graduating accounting seniors. Each student spent 5 to 8 minutes with a prospective employer. Student resumes were provided to employers in advance. The LCPA Central Louisiana Chapter awarded a $500 scholarship to the top three students. Madeline Tassin, an LSUA accounting senior, was one of the recipients.

The Round Robin approach has proven successful in helping employers identify potential interns and new hires. Likewise, students gain valuable experience with the interview process.

Employers participating in this year's event were...

LSUA Offers Education Requirements for CPA Exam

The new Bachelor of Science degree in accounting was recently launched at LSU of Alexandria. Dr. Kent Lachney, CPA, Coordinator of Accounting, for the LSUA Department of Business Administration indicates that students in central Louisiana and throughout the state can earn a Bachelor of Science in Accounting in either a traditional or 100% online format. “The degree equips students with the knowledge and skills necessary for successful completion of the CPA exam and for entry into public accounting, industry, or governmental/non-profit employment,” states Dr. Lachney.

Working professionals who already have a bachelor’s degree in business or non-business programs could enroll for classes to meet the education requirements to sit for the CPA exam, which includes 24 hours in business, 24 hours in upper level accounting, and 6 hours in business law. The number of hours could vary depending upon a student’s undergraduate degree. For example, fewer hours would be required if an individual has already completed a degree in business. Furthermore, students could choose to complete a second degree to meet the CPA education requirements.

There are many benefits from studying accounting at LSU of Alexandria such as a low student-to-faculty ratio, academically and professionally qualified faculty with significant industry experience in accounting and business, and a degree accredited by ACBSP, an international accreditation agency for business schools and programs. Accounting is a 5-star occupation, which indicates a great need for the profession. Accounting graduates command some of the highest salary of all business graduates.

The Bachelor of Science in Accounting degree and education requirements for the CPA exam solidifies LSU of Alexandria as a premier destination for a quality education in accounting. For more information on the accounting program at LSU of Alexandria, please email Dr. Kent Lachney, CPA, at [email protected].

LSUA Ranked in Top 20 Most Affordable Online Business Programs

LSU of Alexandria's business program is ranked in the Top 20 nationwide among the most affordable online business degrees, according to TheBestSchools.org. The website ranks fully accredited college programs based on average yearly tuition price according to the National Center for Education Statistics.

“Affordable, available, and accredited is the best way to describe LSUA’s online business program,” says Dr. Randall Dupont, Chair of Business Administration at LSU of Alexandria. "We are not surprised by the Top 20 ranking," he added.

AffordableSchools.net ranked LSUA's online business program the 17th top value in the nation. "These rankings are consistent with our mission at LSU of Alexandria," says Dupont, "which is to offer affordable undergraduate degrees in a robust academic environment that challenges our students to excel." Both websites ranked the LSUA business program as the most as the most affordable online business program in Louisiana.

The Association of Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) recently awarded LSUA a 10-year accreditation for its business program. "It's a recognition of the academic excellence LSUA is building," says Dupont. "Affordability and high academic quality make a great value proposition," he continued.

LSUA now offers an on-campus and online B.S. in Accounting as well as a new International Business concentration in Business Administration. Other concentrations in the business program include Entrepreneurship, Finance, Management, Marketing, and Management Information Systems. Presentation of Scholarly Research Enhanced

The LSUA Bolton Library now offers large printer services, thanks to the generosity of Dr. Harold Langford, the Scott O. Brame / CLECO Endowed Chair and the Department of Business Administration. Dr. Langford is an active proponent of undergraduate scholarly research. The large printer will be a vital service to LSUA students presenting research at academic conferences such as the LSUA Scholar's Day. Academic poster sessions require high quality 3 x 5 foot posters summarizing the scholar's research.

Michael Waller, Systems Librarian of the LSUA Bolton Library, describes the large printer as perhaps the highest quality of its kind in the state. Furthermore, Waller provides valuable technical support to students in the design process. The library's website includes a tutorial and templates for designing academic posters. More information on the large print service can be found at https://www.lsua.edu/library/library-services/largeprint.

LSUA Launches International Business Program

LSUA is launching an International Business program this month, says Dr. Randall Dupont, Chair of Business Administration for LSUA. The program is a concentration in the B.S. in Business Administration and will prepare students for international opportunities in an ever-changing global environment. “Last year Louisiana was the 5th largest state exporter of goods, generating $66 billion,” says Dupont.

Professor Rafael Romero, lead faculty for LSUA’s International Business program, says the degree equips students for jobs in the private sector such as export/import compliance, freight brokers, international finance and marketing, business development, supply chain management, strategy, transportation and logistics. Public entities also demand students with a background in international business. These include agencies administering ports, the U.S Customs and Border Protection, the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service, the Export-Import Bank, and the Small Business Administration, to name a few.

Professor Romero notes 85% of companies selling goods in foreign markets are small and medium-sized businesses. “With regards to Foreign Direct Investment, Louisiana has more than 500 international firms, generating thousands of jobs in our area,” say Romero.

The course work enables students to analyze complex and unstructured trade conditions, evaluate risks and opportunities, communicate clearly and persuasively, understand the role of diplomacy and the art of negotiations, grasp the impact of international events on trade, demonstrate cultural sensitivity, and understand of trade regulations. The concentration in International Business aligns with LSUA’s overall vision to contribute to the economic, cultural, and intellectual growth of Louisiana. Contact Rafael Romero for more information at [email protected].
