Michigan 4-H

Michigan 4-H

On April 3, we made the difficult decision to modify, cancel or postpone all face-to-face youth events and programs managed by MSU Extension and Michigan 4-H until September 1. These are complex decisions that take time to digest–especially considering the current stressors added by the COVID-19 pandemic. We are all navigating a unique and complex situation that really is about life and death.

While this is a heartbreaking decision for us and the community, our first obligation is to safeguard the health and wellbeing of staff members and all of those associated with our work, including 4-Hers and volunteers. We will continue to work with local entities, including fair boards and livestock councils, with whom we partner throughout the state to determine solutions.

We are proud of how our staff members are adapting to the new normal by providing virtual opportunities so 4-H’ers and their families can continue learning to do and doing to learn.

Allegan County 4-H

Cole Wixom was a long time member of Allegan County 4H. He made a significant impact on the county's 4H program and the 4-H dairy program with which he was a key member for many years. Cole made 4H friends throughout the state due to his participation in state 4H Dairy Days.
Organizers within the dairy group would like to honor Cole and the Wixom family after his tragic and untimely death during a military training accident in January. In his honor, organizers are selling t-shirts commemorating Cole. The team representing Allegan County at State 4H Dairy Days will be proudly wearing the same shirts as they compete. Proceeds from the sale of these shirts will be used to purchase a picnic table for the family to be used in the area near the milking parlor and at the family's discretion. A small memorial plaque will be attached to the table. A picnic table is a place where friends and family gather to share good times, a meal, a game of cards and a place where memories are made. This small token will hopefully be a space where family and friends of Cole and the Wixom family can once again make good memories.
Order forms are available and are due with payment to the Allegan County MSU Extension office by August 7 with checks made out to “Allegan County 4-H Livestock Leaders”. Shirts are $20 plus additional $2 for extended sizes (2x and above). Shirts will be ready prior to fair.
Thank you for helping to honor our own hometown military heroes in this manner. A flood of these shirts at the fair and after will help show our support for the family and all military active and veterans in our community.

Any families in Allegan County looking for a wonderful cultural experience hosting this summer? We need your help!

Michigan host families...we need your help to provide our delegates with an amazing experience here in Michigan July 27-Aug 21. We have three delegates without host families. Please consider hosting...I know there are three awesome families out there who would make great hosts. We need to find them by July 5, or the delegates will be traveling to other states. Which means they fly into Michigan and board another airplane to another state. We have two 13 year old boys and an 18 year old female.
