Student Veterans of America at GVSU

Student Veterans of America at GVSU Student Veterans of America at GVSU is a Student Organization dedicated to assisting Student Veterans and their families transitioning into civilian life.

While the SVA GVSU chapter is dedicated to assisting Student Veterans transition into civilian life as a student, membership to the SVA GVSU chapter is not necessarily limited to Student Veterans. We welcome everyone that wishes to help, support, and advocate for Student Veterans. The GVSU SVA also contributes its time to volunteering in the local community. Meetings are held once a month and generally only last 30 - 90 minutes on average. Meeting times are published two weeks before the meeting on this page, and are usually determined at the start of each semester based around the members availability. Meeting attendance is not mandatory, however if you want something done, you must attend to advocate for it. Membership is attained by logging on to the orgsync page and joining the organization. The membership request will then be forwarded to the e-board. It is strongly advised that you contact us before submitting a membership request so we are familiar with you before having the request sent to us.

Mission: The Student Veterans Organization's purpose is to provide an environment for Veterans and family members to gain support and guidance to continue a successful academic journey and to outreach to surrounding communities and our university.

Today, Governor Gretchen Whitmer named Zaneta Adams as the new director of the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency.

“Michigan’s veterans were willing to sacrifice everything for our country, and we owe it to each of these brave men and women to provide the benefits and support services that they’ve earned,” Whitmer said.

“Zaneta has worked tirelessly to improve veterans’ lives and the services they earned during their time in uniform. I look forward to working alongside her to bring the best possible care to our veterans and build a stronger Michigan that honors their service.”

Lowering of flags:

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has ordered U.S. and Michigan flags within the State Capitol Complex and on all state buildings to be lowered to half-staff until sunset on June 4, 2019 to honor the victims of the deadly mass shooting in Virginia Beach.

“My heart is with the loved ones of the victims and the residents of Virginia who were deeply impacted by this senseless tragedy,” Whitmer said. “Our nation has lost far too many people to gun violence, and we cannot continue to let these acts of violence become the norm.”

On Friday, a gunman opened fire in a municipal building in Virginia Beach, Virginia, killing 12 people and sending four others to the hospital. Officials released the names of the 12 people killed in the shooting:

• Alexander Mikhail Gusev
• Christopher Kelly Rapp
• Herbert "Bert" Snelling
• Joshua Hardy
• Katherine A. Nixon
• Laquita C. Brown
• Mary Louise Gayle
• Michelle "Missy" Langer
• Richard H. Nettleton
• Robert "Bobby" Williams
• Ryan Keith Cox
• Tara Welch Gallagher

The State of Michigan remembers the victims and stands in solidarity with residents of the Commonwealth of Virginia by lowering flags to half-staff. Michigan residents, businesses, schools, local governments and other organizations also are encouraged to display the flag at half-staff.
