Student Veterans of America at GVSU

Student Veterans of America at GVSU Student Veterans of America at GVSU is a Student Organization dedicated to assisting Student Veterans and their families transitioning into civilian life.
(7)

While the SVA GVSU chapter is dedicated to assisting Student Veterans transition into civilian life as a student, membership to the SVA GVSU chapter is not necessarily limited to Student Veterans. We welcome everyone that wishes to help, support, and advocate for Student Veterans. The GVSU SVA also contributes its time to volunteering in the local community. Meetings are held once a month and generally only last 30 - 90 minutes on average. Meeting times are published two weeks before the meeting on this page, and are usually determined at the start of each semester based around the members availability. Meeting attendance is not mandatory, however if you want something done, you must attend to advocate for it. Membership is attained by logging on to the orgsync page and joining the organization. The membership request will then be forwarded to the e-board. It is strongly advised that you contact us before submitting a membership request so we are familiar with you before having the request sent to us.

Mission: The Student Veterans Organization's purpose is to provide an environment for Veterans and family members to gain support and guidance to continue a successful academic journey and to outreach to surrounding communities and our university.

Why are the younger Veterans avoiding the Veteran Service Organizations? Before I researched why the post-Vietnam generation of Veterans were not joining Veteran Service Organizations (VSO), I asked myself, “Why wouldn’t veterans want to be around other veterans?” Truly, participating in a VSO...

Hey guys! The veterans history project event last semester went so well, that they reached out to us to ask if we wanted to do it again this semester! If I can get 5 or 6 people willing to do 45 minute to an hour long interviews about their life before, during, and after the military on camera, I can start trying to coordinate it. If you guys are interested where the Videos go, WKTV voices has uploaded all the former interviews on their YouTube channel. If anyone wants to volunteer or has question, message me!
Don’t forget about the veteran camping trip 23-27 August, tents welcome, there will be inside sleeping available for up to 10 people. Bring some beer and a swimsuit, food will be provided.
