Scammers pose as priests in texts and email, ask parishioners for gift cards, cash - Diocese of Grand Rapids

AGAIN: Scam Alert:

Scammers are continuing to impersonate priests in the Diocese of Grand Rapids through email, text or Facebook messenger, asking parishioners to respond to urgent requests for cash or to purchase gift cards. Don’t fall for it. Your pastor or associate pastor will never contact a parishioner directly with an emergency request for cash or gift cards. Messages asking parishioners to help fulfill a need would come through the parish’s or the diocese’s official communication channels or be accomplished through a collection approved by the diocese. If you’re not sure about a text, email or Facebook message you’ve received, do not engage or respond and call your parish office to notify a staff member. In addition, please note that neither your parish nor the diocese will ever sell or give away parishioners’ personal information. For ongoing updates and information on identifying and avoiding scams, visit http://bit.ly/GRdioceseScamUpdate.

Still looking for someone to help collage student:

A young college student is asking for our help. She would like to interview about 5 people, for about 10 - 15 minutes depending on answers and how much information is given.. The type of questions will pertain to their religious view points, political view points, and how they relate to one another if at all. She is looking for people after June 10th, and it doesn't have to be in person, over the phone is fine, and is good with any day the volunteers are available.

If you are interested please let me know. Thank you Kim

Hello GV students - I hope you are enjoying your summer break, wherever you are & whatever you are doing! Grand Valley contacted me regarding an opportunity for a student who is interested in being a part of the Interfaith Youth Core. Here's some info about it:

1. The student would meet once a month to do some training and discussions.
2. If a minimum of four of the six members of the cohort go out for a meal, CIR would pick it up once a month. This should allow the students to have some informal time to get to know each other.
3. The student would take a pre and post assessment and also write 2 short reflective pieces (one in December and one in April).
4. Sometime in March/April the student can go back to their larger student organization and talk about some of the things they learned through this cohort.
5. The student would get $200 at the end of each semester.

If you are interested in this, let me know in the comments.

The Diocese of Grand Rapids’ Office of Communications issues the following statement from Bishop Walkowiak regarding the bombing attacks in Sri Lanka on Easter and the shooting at the Congregation Chabad synagogue in Poway, California, on April 27, during Passover:

“Recent occurrences of violent attacks on people of faith gathered in prayer are an affront to humanity. The coordinated series of bombings in Sri Lanka on Easter that killed hundreds of innocent worshippers in Catholic Churches, and others of all faiths in nearby hotels, is a great evil. We join with people of goodwill throughout the world in condemning these acts of terrorism.

Further, as we absorb the news that another house of worship has been the target of violence, I join with my brother bishops in expressing sadness for the victims and their families and deep concern over this most recent attack on people of faith. We must continue to denounce acts of hatred and violence carried out against innocent people, people of any faith, as they gather to pray and worship.

Calling on the Lord, who is our refuge and strength in times of trial, I ask you to join me in praying for those who were killed and injured during these violent acts in Sri Lanka and California and for their families and communities. May the God of hope, who has raised his son Jesus from the dead, instill peace in the hearts of all people.”

Good Afternoon! My name is Ryen Dwyer. I am a Jesuit scholastic in formation for the priesthood and am currently working as the Volunteer Coordinator at Red Cloud Indian School, a Lakota Catholic K-12 school in the Jesuit tradition on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota.

I am writing to ask whether you would be willing to share a year-of-service opportunity with your Newman community, especially with your graduating seniors. We have a large Volunteer Program of 23 volunteers who serve primarily as teachers throughout the school and in many other capacities. Our Volunteer Program is modeled after JVC, with 4 pillars of Justice, Spirituality, Community, and Simplicity.

We're especially seeking volunteers with a commitment to living these values and a desire to be involved in Catholic education. Most of our positions are filled, but we're still hiring volunteers for a couple key positions in the high school and middle school.

I include a description of the program below, as well as a PDF, which can be shared electronically.

Thank you for any assistance you're willing to provide in sharing this with your community.

Gratefully,
Ryen Dwyer

Red Cloud Indian School is seeking applicants for the 2019-2020 Red Cloud Volunteer Program cohort. Red Cloud Volunteers work for and with the Oglala Lakota people for justice in education on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota.

Red Cloud Volunteers serve primarily as teachers while also earning a commercial driver's license (CDL) and driving school buses, assist with after-school activities and coaching, and serve Red Cloud in various other capacities. Volunteers share life with fellow volunteers in intentional communities of 6-10, and volunteer life is shaped by the the program pillars of:

* Justice in Education

* Spirituality

* Community

* Living Simply

Although previous educational experience is valued, this is not a requirement.

* Red Cloud Volunteers receive:

* Room and board

* Monthly stipend

* Health insurance (including vision and dental)

* Access to a shared vehicle

Opportunities for spiritual formation (including retreats and days of reflection)

Although our AmeriCorps grant is not guaranteed from year to year, most volunteers also serve concurrently as part-time AmeriCorps volunteers.

The term of service is one school year (July 2019-May 2020), and may be renewed for up to two additional school years.

We are currently seeking volunteers to fill the following positions: High School Social Studies Teacher, High School Activities Director, and Middle School English Teacher.

For more information: Email Ryen Dwyer SJ at [email protected]

To apply: Email cover letter and resume to Ryen Dwyer at [email protected]
