Spanish Professor Jason Yancey just snagged a grant for a 3D printer to make shadow puppets that he uses in teaching. He explains it will be not unlike what you see in this image. Here are “students in my puppet class (SPA 350) using the 3D-printed puppets (on a stage I was able to build over the Christmas break thanks to an FTLC Sandbox Learning Innovation grant).” Way to go!

Alumni Spotlight! Kelli Dykstra Darcia, '12, graduated with majors in English and Spanish. Teaching in a Spanish immersion program after graduation encouraged her to seek out her Master's degree in Dual Language Instruction. Not only does she use her education in her full time job, but she also tutors adults who are hoping to learn Spanish to be able to communicate with Spanish speakers in our community. In 2017, she became a part-time Realtor in West Michigan where she is able to use her Spanish speaking abilities to help native Spanish speakers feel assured and comfortable throughout what can be a high stress transaction.

Kelli writes, "Getting my major in Spanish was one of the best things I could have done for myself. I am thankful for the opportunity to have studied abroad in Costa Rica through the Padnos International Center because without that experience, I would not be as successful as I am today."

Fight to revitalise Arabic language learning begins with children’s books

“Research says you have to have around 20 titles per child in a classroom if we are really going to entice them to read. It's like chocolate, if you see it in front of you sitting there, you will eat it. Same thing with books. If you have books all around you – there is no escape, you will read,” said Dr Thomure.

How an author, professor and publisher are working to make Arabic books more approachable to children

It may be challenging right now to think about your education and your future, but let's celebrate our successes! Amber Sackett, '17 earned a degree in French with minors in Arabic and Middle East Studies. She was able to study abroad in Morocco and France with help from the Padnos International Center and Frederik Meijer Office of Fellowships. After graduating, Amber returned to France and visited Egypt to maintain her language proficiency and prepare her for her journey as a graduate student in the Department of French and Francophone Studies at the University of California Los Angeles. At UCLA, Amber focuses on Francophone Middle East & North Africa, representations of ‘the Other’ in French literature & arts, and Post/Decolonialism studies. She looks forward to returning to France and hopes to visit other French-speaking countries. Ultimately she hopes to be a professor.

Keep up the great work, Amber! Read more about our alums at https://www.gvsu.edu/mll/alumni-highlights-192.htm.

Alumni Highlight! After graduation (Social Work/Spanish), Mary Zick-Turner, '10 spent a year in Spain teaching English with the Language and Culture Assistant program through the Spanish Government. She was encouraged to do so by her Spanish faculty advisor in the GVSU Modern Languages and Literatures Department. The opportunity to be immersed in the Spanish language allowed her to build upon what she learned in her GVSU Spanish courses and helped her feel more confident in her speaking abilities. Following her return, Mary went on to work in various nonprofit agencies New York City, Washington, DC, and Boston, MA where she provides case management and individual/family therapy services to Spanish-speaking clients.
