Woods County OSU Extension - FCS & OHCE

Woods County OSU Extension - FCS & OHCE Oklahoma Home and Community Education, Inc. (OHCE), is a program of continuing education in all aspects of home and community life.

OHCE EMBLEM The emblem is a circle suggesting the continuity of life in our state, homes, and community education. The single candle symbolizes the unity of goals and purposes of our organization. The candle emphasizes the saying “it is better to light just one little candle” and through unity light the world. The edge of the seal has 77 bites of light between the cogs representing all counties of Oklahoma. This forms a work wheel that our members have put their shoulders against and thus turns our world into a better society. Standing behind the candle is our great state of Oklahoma. OHCE CREED We believe the family should come first in the life of the individual, the community, and the nation. We will build our homes on love and mutual respect. We shall endeavor to discover the potential in our children and our neighbor’s children and to help them develop their personalities in such a manner that they make a worthwhile contribution to life. We shall maintain high standards in our homes through research and education to promote better use of our environment and better living condition for all. We shall encourage a faith in a God of love who is forever revealed through natural laws and human personalities. We shall have faith that strong leaders shall go forth from our homes and communities, carrying with them throughout the universe the ideals which we have proclaimed. THE OHCE COLORS AND FLOWER The OHCE colors are green and gold, and the flower is the African Marigold. THE COUNTY HOME AND COMMUNITY EDUCATION The purpose of Oklahoma Home and Community Education is to develop leadership, and to promote and extend the best interests of the family, home and community through a County HCE Association. The County Organization is made up of the membership of each local group, is governed by the elective officers of the county organization, and the presidents and secretaries of all local groups. THE LOCAL HOME AND COMMUNITY EDUCATION GROUP The local HCE group is organized at the community or local level for the purpose of studying Family and Consumer Sciences and putting into practice research-based methods for improving family life.

Mission: The organization's ultimate mission is to educate its members to be well-informed and able to handle change in their homes and communities. Through its relationship with the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service, OHCE presents research-based information to its members.

Please see the attached document regarding Phase III guidelines for OHCE meetings and events.

It is great news that we are now able to have small meetings, as long as we continue to take precautions (hand-washing, sanitizer, masks, etc.) and maintain social distancing. If you are age 65 or older or have health issues, please continue to stay at home.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

Here's another member, Addisann Weber of the Alva 4-H Club, showing off her cooking skills with the 4-H Food, Fun & Family fiesta recipes! Doesn't that look delicious? That looks like a feast for the entire family. Her mom, Amanda Jones, reported that the enchiladas and guacamole were top notch and not expensive to make!

Addisann also made a wonderful crockpot dessert, angel food pumpkin cake. It sounds so cool - you place a can of sweetened condensed milk in the center of the cake while it is cooking. After you take the cake out, you continue to cook the milk for two more hours and it caramelizes and makes a delicious topping - Dulce de leche! How great does that sound?

Good job, Addisann!

Did you know that cherries had such great health benefits? Their antioxidants can even help lower blood pressure. When cherries get ripe and available, add a few into your daily fruits and vegetable intake.

Did you know the anthocyanins that give red cherries their dark rich color may help lower your blood pressure and keep your blood vessels healthy and soft? 🍒 https://wb.md/2M2bD7V

Grow & Share OHCE celebrated OHCE Week with several activities! Co-Presidents Janet Cunningham & Carol Erikson reported the following:

"We had a Virtual Happy Hour with our favorite soda on May 4 using Zoom. Carol Erikson and I sent each member an appreciation card with a Happy Hour drink coupon from Rialto that arrived in mailboxes on May 4. We have one new member who is joining in honor of OHCE Week. We also donated and planted knockout rose bushes - one at Beadles Nursing Home and one at Share Convalescent Home.

On our Zoom meeting, we also judged Earth Day poster entries from the fifth grade classes at Lincoln for our Resource Management Committee."

That was quite a week for Grow & Share! Thanks for all the hard work you did for our community and congratulations on your new member!

What a great testament to Oklahoma Extension! Even though we haven’t been able to meet you in person, we hope we’ve been able to provide helpful and timely information to you during this pandemic. We’ve had to adapt our method of doing business as usual and we’ve been able to roll with the flow.

Randy McMurphy, Woods County Commissioner, signed a proclamation this morning stating that the week of May 3 - May 9, 2020 is officially Woods County OHCE Week!

While it is disappointing that we cannot gather together for our annual Spring Association Meeting or have special events to celebrate this week, we can STILL share what a wonderful program OHCE is and encourage our community to see what we are all about! Invite a friend or neighbor to come to a meeting when we are safe to meet. Text, email, or call someone to tell them about OHCE.

You can still carry out a good deed by planting flowers or trees, dropping off a treat on someone's front porch or sending a card to someone in the nursing home to brighten their day. That's what OHCE is all about - service to our community!

Let's hear how your group plans to celebrate OHCE Week!
