We are excited to share that on Saturday, October 24, UMass Amherst will serve as one of seven campus sites for the newly launched Hackachusetts, a statewide AI hackathon bringing together students across Massachusetts for a full day of building, experimentation, and collaboration. Students will work in teams to develop projects around four challenge areas: Healthtech/Biotech, Robotics, Energy, and Education.

The goal is to bring together students from different disciplines, help them form teams, and give them the tools and time to turn an idea into a working project. Participants do not need to arrive with a team or a fully developed idea. The event will run from 8 am-8 pm, and we have reserved the Marriott Campus Center which can accommodate approximately 150 students. Every participant will receive Amazon Kiro credits to build with during the event, and unused credits can be used throughout the remainder of the month.

This is open to our undergraduate and graduate students across majors and experience levels.

SDP Showcase: Animal Detector “This project presents an intelligent animal detection and collision avoidance system using computer vision and proximity sensors. A machine learning model detects animals in real time and computes a hazard score, which is combined with sensor data to trigger alerts and automatic breaking. The system is implemented on a prototype RC car to demonstrate real time detection, alerting, and response.

SDP Showcase: 4-Axis 3D Printer “ 3-D printers are limited by restricted slicing paths, which often requires structural supports that increase material usage and printing time. With a 4-Axis 3-D printer, which incorporates an additional rotational degree of freedom on the printing nozzle, it is now possible to reduce or entirely eliminate the need for supports during the printing process. This work highlights the potential of multi-axis 3-D printing to improve efficiency and reduce costs while keeping the same level of part integrity.”
