UMass Ballroom Dance Team

UMass Ballroom Dance Team The Official page for the University of Massachusetts Amherst Ballroom Dance Team Our team has ~80 members who attend competitions held all over the Northeast and New England dancing at levels ranging from Newcomer to Pre-champ.

Being on the team is as competitive as you want it to be, as everyone has different goals and aspirations. Tryouts are held at the beginning of fall and spring semester and we encourage everyone to come who has an interest in doing ballroom regardless of previous experience or not. Team members join with varying degrees of experience; some have been dancing their whole lives and others have never danced before tryouts.

Hi everyone, due to the holiday tomorrow I will not be hosting my closet hour tomorrow. Instead I will be hosting it on Tuesday since Umass will be following a Monday schedule.
CALL FOR PRODUCERS AND DIRECTORS! In alliance with UMass Students for Reproductive Justice, we are producing our annual show, Nostras Voces (Our Voices), a multi-media art show and performance to uplift marginalized student voices. Auditions would start in November and we would be practicing twice a week until our performances in February. No experience needed, we aim to be a collaborative, explorative, and inclusive art process. If you have any additional inquiries feel free to message me or email [email protected]
Congratulations💃
Hey! Is any ballroom dancer, follower to be precise available on campus during these summers?
Hey guys! I'm doing research on ballroom dancers for a class project! If you could take no more than 5 minutes to fill out this form and post it in other dance pages, it would be a huge help! Thanks in advance!

Burlington, MA 01803 (781) 272-8800 TEACHER’S SCHEDULE 9:00 am - 10:30 am The Magic of Shape in Ballroom In the ballroom dances, considerable value is placed on producing pleasing shapes as we move across the floor. We will review principles that will produce high-impact, dynamic shapes in the standard dances. 10:30 am - 12:00 pm Connection Everybody talks about it. What is it? How can we achieve a satisfying and mechanically sound connection with our partner that allows us to move as one? 12:45 - 2:15 pm From Syllabus to Open Choreography We will explore routines in Waltz and/or Quickstep that we can use to introduce our syllabus students to open choreography. The idea is to find basic combinations that syllabus dancers are comfortable with and look at ways to transform them into competitive groups. We'll look at varying timing, direction, and shape. Tuition: DTCB Members - all classes included in your membership Non-member Teachers: Full Day $60.00/pp or $75.00/pc Afternoon - Open Classes - Students: $10.00/pp Others $20.00 Bio: Mark Sheldon and Didi von Deck have danced together for over 20 years and were successful competitors in the open amateur, over 35, and professional divisions. Together, they represented the United States at 7 World Championships and were the first US representatives to the World Games in 2001. They were 5 times undefeated US standard champions in the over 35 division and were 3 time Blackpool finalists. They won many US and international competitions during their years of active competition. Mark and Didi have been longtime coaches of the MIT ballroom dance team and have taught the BU, Harvard, and UConn teams as well. They have taught at MassABDA's winter dance camp and given lectures at the US National Championships and routinely conduct workshops in the area. They are members of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing and are adjudicators for many of the area collegiate ballroom dance competitions. Mark and Didi also are avid yoga practitioners and Didi teaches yoga at the Down Under Yoga studios. Mark also teaches computer science at Tufts University and Didi has an active orthopedic surgery practice at the Cambridge Health Alliance. Mark Sheldon and Didi von Deck – Professional Standard Coaches Mark and Didi have represented the United States at 7 World Championships and at the 2001 World Games. Their titles include: 5-time undefeated US Senior Ballroom Champion; North American Senior Champion; Northeast US Amateur and Senior Champion; Belgian Open Senior Champion; US National Amateur finalist; 3-time British Open (Blackpool) Senior finalist; International Senior finalist; Professional Rising Star finalist. They started teaching ballroom dancing over 20 years ago. Mark and Didi have been coaching the MIT Ballroom Dance Team in Standard style for the last 20 years. In addition to being a dance coach, Mark has a Ph.D. in Computer Science from MIT and is a visiting professor of computer science at the Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering. Didi started teaching at the MIT Ballroom Dance Club 25 years ago and has been coaching the MIT Ballroom Dance Team for 14 years, where she and Mark currently coach the syllabus and open levels of Standard. Didi believes that working with a partner to create movement together as an expression of the music is one of the most challenging but satisfying activities to pursue.
