The sisters of IGU host a major philanthropic event each semester in support of the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition. Supporting the NOCC is particularly important to Gammies because it offers a time to remember a past sister of IGU, Wendy Babson, who battled ovarian cancer. In addition to supporting the NOCC, the sisters of IGU host and participate in many other philanthropy events within the Greek and Amherst communities. Each fall, we host Come and Spaghett-It, an all-you-can-eat spaghetti buffet, for our philanthropy, the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition. It is an event filled with music, food, and raffles from local businesses. All leftovers from the event are also donated to soup kitchens in the Amherst community. In the spring, we hold an event called Cookies for a Cure, benefitting the NOCC. We have endless batches of cookies to decorate in between classes. Check back for more information on events hosted by Iota Gamma Upsilon and to see what Gammies have been up to in the community! Additionally, if there is an event that you or your group would like to share with us or need volunteers/participants for, please feel free to contact us. Thanks for all of your continued support and keep paying it forward :)

This past Saturday the sisters of Iota Gam participated in U-dance, which raises money for Bay State Children's Hospital. Every year, over 40,000 children come through BCH's doors for anything from pre-maturely born to cancer diagnoses to traumatic accidents. This year all $133,270.61 raised from UDance donations will go directly to building a new Pediatric Procedural Unit with ~16 beds to replace the extremely cramped 6 bed unit the hospital currently has. Thank you for supporting us and helping us reach our goal!

We are so proud of our sister Lesly Balanzar and her involvement in the Amherst community! This is her second semester working at Craig's Doors! Her job consists of her setting up the shelter, signing guests in, sleeping over a few shifts a week and breaking down the shelter. Her main duty is to stay over and be on-call in case of an emergency.
"The best part about working there is getting to know the guests and interacting with them. They use me as a resource for the things they need which can range from something as little as finding the bus schedule to something like helping them look for jobs. it's exciting for me to get to know them, especially when I see them go from looking for a job, to getting a job, to eventually finding housing and leaving the shelter"

Thanks for being so amazing Lesly!!

Special s/o to our sister Lauren White who has been so amazing all semester and a big help to the Amherst community!

"As a case work intern at Amherst Community Connections I am given the opportunity to create personal relationships with those in the Amherst community who are extremely low income or experience homelessness. I am available to these individuals as a person to confide in as well as to empower them to achieve their goals. I am grateful to be able to offer my skills and knowledge to those who need it the most" - Lauren White

Over winter break our sister Christina Gianna-Julietta Cappiello worked with Timmy Global Health in Las Canas, Dominican Republic. The organization's mission is to provide adequate and preferential healthcare services to people in need in various parts of the Dominican Republic. Every day for a week, they set up pop-up clinics in a new community that was extremely affected by poverty and poor living conditions. Along with healthcare professionals, various student volunteers (Christina included) assisted in different sectors of the clinic like pharmacy, vitals lab, and patient-physician consult. She got to work in each sector, but spent most of her time scribing and translating for the American physicians. Each day they saw about 150-200 patients. The great thing about Timmy is that they don't just go to a community, give them medicine and leave, never to see them again. In actuality, they have a medical brigade come every 70 days so the community can get follow-up care and renewal of prescriptions. When asked, Christina said "I learned so much about medical care and the Dominican culture at the same time, and I loved this trip because I felt like I was actually making an impact on the lives of the communities." Great job Christina!!

Earlier this summer, our sister Nikki volunteered at the Scooper Bowl at City Hall Plaza in Boston. The all you can eat ice cream event benefits The Jimmy Fund, which raises money for cancer research and care at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Thank you Nikki for all of your efforts to help those in need!

Summertime doesn't stop our sisters from giving back in their hometowns! Our sister Aoife volunteered at Heal The Bay at the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium in Santa Monica, CA. While there, she ran a summer camp for kids, teaching them about the importance of preserving our environment, led beach cleanups, and drove remote operated vehicles on the ocean floor to collect plankton. Aoife, who served as our environmental chair, continues to make us proud in her efforts. As sisters of Iota Gamma Upsilon, we always give back wherever we go!
