Hi everyone!
We haven't updated in a long time because the previous organizers of the AC CSA failed to pass on the torch to the next generation of club members. Given that, we're trying to revive this page as an inclusive community for all asian students and alumni of Amherst College.
Given the absurd recent surge in racism and acts of hate, it is more dire than ever to hold a safe place not only physically but also virtually where targeted groups and recipients of these atrocious acts can come together to vent, to rage, to heal. In the face of such inequities, the response should not be to run but to consolidate; we fight bullies by denying them collectively.
Asian Americans have always been referred to as the "model minorities" of USA. It is a term that is given as praise in the most patronizing manner. We must reject that label, for to accept it is to say to the other PoC of this country, our neighbors in arms, are something else-- that they are the other, the troublemakers, the unwanted. And in doing so, we insult our friends and undermine our own position as a minority in this country. We are no better than the short-sighted people who mock our parent's accents and blame us for what we are not.
Our impetus is not to blockade ourselves in an atmosphere of comfort by being with like-minded individuals. We formed this group with the intent of dissemination. We must dissolve into the very fabric of American society, and drench the fibers of the flag with what we as Asian Americans have to offer, so that those who didn't know, know, and those that refuse to understand, must.
