Amherst College Asian Alumni and Students Association

Amherst College Asian Alumni and Students Association The A4 is meant to be a place where graduates of Amherst college can gather and share ideas for how to succeed in life beyond simply having a good life.

A group for collective Amherst graduates and students to gather as a forum and discuss current events, meet-ups, or plan social activities. We are not exclusive, but focused on creating a safe space for Asian american students to express and share their experiences and backgrounds both during and after college. We are here to help, support, and grow together as an integrated demographic. We fight against the label of model minority and strive to become model citizens. Amherst College Asian Alumni and Student's Association. That's a lot of A's.

Mission: With the current political atmosphere, domestic race relations have been tenuous at best. As education members of society, we must rise above the challenges that minorities within the US are constantly confronted with, and help spur change from within. By coming together, we can work towards increasing visibility, media and political representation, as well as civil liberties of Asian Americans using the advantages we have with our liberal arts education and exposure to this world's diverse people.

"Because higher education may need to be out of step with public opinion in order to serve the public interest, it is bound to taste rotten — or at least bitter — to the very public whose support is necessary for it to pursue its mission, and which it ultimately serves."

Professors Amrita Basu, Judith Frank, Adam Sitze and Martha Umphrey examine the role of the liberal arts and higher education today, when public opinion and interest are not always synonymous.

What I learned from 100 days of rejection

"Everytime I had a great idea....it was a constant battle between wanting to make a difference and being afraid of rejection.."

Jia Jang adventures boldly into a territory so many of us fear: rejection. By seeking out rejection for 100 days -- from asking a stranger to borrow $100 to requesting a "burger refill" at a restaurant -- Jiang desensitized himself to the pain and shame that rejection often brings and, in the proces...

Hi everyone!
We haven't updated in a long time because the previous organizers of the AC CSA failed to pass on the torch to the next generation of club members. Given that, we're trying to revive this page as an inclusive community for all asian students and alumni of Amherst College.

Given the absurd recent surge in racism and acts of hate, it is more dire than ever to hold a safe place not only physically but also virtually where targeted groups and recipients of these atrocious acts can come together to vent, to rage, to heal. In the face of such inequities, the response should not be to run but to consolidate; we fight bullies by denying them collectively.
Asian Americans have always been referred to as the "model minorities" of USA. It is a term that is given as praise in the most patronizing manner. We must reject that label, for to accept it is to say to the other PoC of this country, our neighbors in arms, are something else-- that they are the other, the troublemakers, the unwanted. And in doing so, we insult our friends and undermine our own position as a minority in this country. We are no better than the short-sighted people who mock our parent's accents and blame us for what we are not.
Our impetus is not to blockade ourselves in an atmosphere of comfort by being with like-minded individuals. We formed this group with the intent of dissemination. We must dissolve into the very fabric of American society, and drench the fibers of the flag with what we as Asian Americans have to offer, so that those who didn't know, know, and those that refuse to understand, must.

Chinese Dreamers

What is the Chinese Dream? How is it playing out in China?

A dream, in the truest sense, is a solo act. It can’t be created by committee or replicated en masse. Try as you might, you can’t compel your neighbor to conjure up the reverie that you envision. And therein lies the latent, uncertain energy in the concept of the “Chinese Dream.” As the new central…
