UMass Outing Club

UMass Outing Club We take people into the woods and do things with them.
The University of Massachusetts Outing Club is a Registered Student Organization (RSO) of long standing. Its active membership includes undergraduates, graduate students, faculty, and alumni. Activities go on throughout the school year, and to a lesser extent during the summer. The club owns an impressive array of equipment available for club trips, including canoes, kayaks, skis, sleeping bags, portable stoves, ice-climbing gear, rock climbing gear, caving gear, and wet suits for canoeing. It also owns a cabin in the White Mountains of New Hampshire which is a great jumping-off point for outdoor activities up there including hiking and skiing.

Like our motto says, we take people out into the woods and do things with them. Should you be scared? .....Nope! We do all sorts of outdoor activities: hiking, backpacking, rock climbing, ice climbing, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, whitewater kayaking, canoeing, whitewater rafting, and we will continue caving when the White Nose Syndrome affecting bats is gone. We have a gear locker stuffed with gear for rent. We have access to a mountain wheelchair, and other adaptable equipment. AND we have a cabin in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. We also offer leadership opportunities to those who are interested in becoming trip leaders! Anyone can join. Everyone is welcome with open arms, smiles and handshakes (whichever you prefer). Our leaders are ready to accommodate everyone and their ability levels. You literally need ZERO experience to participate in any of our activities! No matter who you are, what your ability is, what your experience level is, you can join and come on trips with us. The outdoors offers an amazing opportunity to do many fun activities and to experience the world as you have never experienced it before. It can be a place of sanctuary and peace, fun, happiness, lasting friendships, and a place where you can find the strength to pull through challenges you never imagined you would have to face. It is a base, a home away from home for many of us, and we want to welcome you wholeheartedly into our experience. Whether it is for a day hike, a paddle down the river, or if you decide to stay along for our more intense trips and the exciting journey of leadership, there is something here for everyone at UMOC! We hope to meet you soon!

Please join us on Tuesday, April 30th at 8-9 PM in our Gear Locker or in spirit for this year’s annual UMass Gives. This event is a major opportunity for us to make money to fund what we love so much.

Our club’s power hour, which is during the time mentioned above, can give the club a lot of extra funds—if we get the most separate donations in this hour in comparison to other RSO’s and groups on campus in their power hours, we could win a cash prize of up to $2,000 EXTRA—now that’s a lot of micro spikes!!! The link below will bring you to our donations page, and remember donations make the biggest difference from 8-9 PM on TUESDAY, APRIL 30th! 😊

Thank you to Christian DeCelle (@decelleration) for the photo

How to Sleep Warm Outside This Winter

With the upcoming snow storm this Sunday and the fact that we are still very much in the midst of winter, it can be very important to know your facts on how to stay warm in winter conditions. NOLS has written an amazing article discussing staying warm outdoors in the cold when you have to sleep in these winter conditions––it's full of really good information that is extremely valuable. Feel free to check it out, and a special thanks to NOLS themselves for writing such a helpful piece!

Get some tips on how to stay cozy and warm while sleeping outdoors on a winter camping expedition.

Hi UMOC! Hope you’re having a great break!

Here is volunteer opportunity from the Sierra club happening in two weeks!

“This message below is from Erica Dodt, from Sierra Club's national Clean Transportation For All campaign. She is coordinating these Auto Show volunteers all over the country. This webinar obviously already happened, but it was to introduce people to the effort.

What we'll be doing basically is handing out flyers, and I (or maybe Erica) can prep anyone who wants to come with some basic talking points for whoever they interact with.

Transportation is the leading cause of carbon pollution in the United States, but I bet you already knew that. I wonder, are you also hungry for opportunities to fight for more clean transportation in your community?

Join me online on December 3, at 6 p.m. Central/7 p.m. Eastern to learn about our plan to hold Ford accountable in the new year.

As 2019 approaches, we are gearing up to continue our fight preserving existing federal clean car standards. Creating a path for cleaner cars has become one of the biggest environmental issues of our time.

We need to continue putting pressure on Ford to support the clean car standards. We are asking Ford to honor their commitment they made to the American people in 2010. They must stop working to undermine the clean car standards and reaffirm their commitment for California and other states to set their own standards to protect the health and environment of their residents.

Sign up to join the Auto Show Action training to discuss ways to hold Ford accountable at your local auto show. We'll go over talking points, go through an auto show tool kit, share ideas for engagement, and get everyone connected on an online platform. We'll also do a recap on what happened over the past year and examine the ground we've gained!

Join us December 3rd at 6 p.m. Central/7 p.m. Eastern.

If you are unable to participate but would like to learn more, please still sign up and I will be in touch.

See you in December!

Erica Dodt
Midwest Clean Transportation Organizing Representative
Sierra Club”

#UMassGives

Hey UMOC friends! Umass Gives, a donation event for Umass clubs that happens once a year, is going on right now! The event goes from April 26th to April 27th, and all donations to UMOC will help the club with gear purchases that are needed to make UMOC the safe and fun RSO that it is. These donations will additionally help keep UMOC at a low cost to the students in it, which is another very important thing to the club. If the Umass Outing Club receives the highest number of individual donations of all UMass clubs during the competition, UMOC will also be given an additional $1,000!

Donations can be made at:

We thank you for your support of the Umass Outing Club!
