There’s a lot of heaviness in our world at this moment. Gather with students from Hillels across the country to process what’s on your heart. We'll be reflecting on the most recent incidents of police brutality and systemic racism. Emerson is co-facilitating and looks forward to seeing you there.

This past year, we were so fortunate to have been able to work with our students to create new, exciting, and innovative programming through our UMass Extended Family of Innovators and Thinkers (EFIT) initiative. These were some of our favorite memories from the past year, and we wanted to give a huge thank you to those who made it possible. Support for this program is provided by the Discretionary Fund of the Jewish Endowment Foundation, a division of the Jewish Federation of Western Massachusetts. We are so thankful to be able to provide these leadership opportunities for our students and create meaningful experiences for the UMass community!

Our students thank you!

This year, more than 1200 students engaged with UMass Hillel to build Jewish community, explore their culture, learn about Jewish values, and experience leadership. Along their journey, they made lifetime friends and lasting memories. But, don't need to take our word for it - just watch these moving highlights from our 2020 Senior Ceremony to hear how your support is making an immediate impact.

As we head into Shabbat tonight, we are thinking about these words written by April Baskin (Instagram: @joyous.justice). We are praying for those standing up around the world and using their voice to fight for racial justice. We are praying for those we have lost, and those who we continue to seek justice for. Take some time this Shabbat to think about the work you can take on in your community, and around the world, to fight for justice and make a difference. “Prayer alone won’t change racist policies- but prayer can uplift us and energize us toward the anti-racist actions that we take” (quote and photo credit to @modern_ritual on Instagram)

As we once again see police brutality take a black life with the murder of George Floyd, we recommit to declaring emphatically that black lives matter. Jewish tradition teaches that each of us is responsible for tikkun olam - repairing the broken world. UMass Hillel stands as an ally with the Black community and all who are fighting racism and bigotry in this moment of reckoning for our country. We stand with the many Black Jewish members of our community and all students of color whose lives are made more difficult by intolerance and systemic racism. May we work to end the plague of racism through educating ourselves, being politically active, and donating our time and resources. To the Jews of color in our community: our hearts are with you during this especially painful time. If you’re looking for space to grieve, to feel angry, or just to process, feel free to reach out. We see you, we love you, and we are here for you.

Seventy-five years ago this week, Nazi Germany surrendered unconditionally to the Allied Forces. Join CJP to commemorate this landmark event by hearing from Holocaust Survivor and author, Rena Quint. Rena will be providing first hand testimony about her life story and how, as a child, her parents and brothers were murdered by the Nazis. In the concentration camps, she was cared for by other “mothers” which was the inspiration for her book, “A Daughter of Many Mothers.” After the war, she was adopted by Jacob and Leah Globe in the United States and now lives in Israel. Hear her story tomorrow, May 7th at 2:00 p.m. ET. Registration is required at this link: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_dHMdcwEYRgSK48VT_dPusQ

"We must never lose sight of the fact that Israeli-Palestinian peace is possible and it will be reached. It will be based on the end of the occupation, the establishment of a democratic Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza; a shared open capital in Jerusalem; economic cooperation; water sharing; mutual respect and recognition of the dignity and importance of both sides political, cultural, historic and religious heritage in this land; the removal of Israeli settlers in the West Bank and Gaza and the end of the suffering of the Palestinian refugees through return to the State of Palestine (for those who want it) with financial compensation and assistance for the resettlement, housing and employment generation for all Palestinian refugees. This was, is and will be the basis for peace between Israel and Palestine." From In Pursuit of Peace in Israel and Palestine
