Feeling deep gratitude for the teaching and work of Lord Rabbi Jonathan Sacks. His commitment to peace and to interfaith understanding will continue to be an inspiration to many. May his memory be a blessing.

The Hillel community mourns the death of Lord Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, who taught and inspired so many of our students and professionals through the years.

Rabbi Sacks most recently connected with the Hillel community in March for a [email protected] session on Passover’s message of hope during the coronavirus pandemic: “It’s only when we let our suffering connect us with other people, just as we’re doing right now, that we begin to turn the bread of affliction into the bread of freedom.”

May his memory be a blessing.

Whether you're home or on campus this spring, Hillel will be here to support you!

UMass Amherst has announced the Spring 2021 Operating Plan, one that emphasizes a strong COVID-19 testing program and a strict adherence to public health protocols while advancing students’ academic progress toward degree completion.

In-person, face-to-face instruction for undergraduate and graduate students will be offered on-campus this spring in certain classes, labs and studios identified as requiring in-person instruction. First-year students may also be provided with a face-to-face instructional opportunity, although the majority of the teaching in the Spring Semester will be fully remote.

Specific cohorts of undergraduate students, whose academic success is most closely associated with on-campus learning and living, will be given the option to live on-campus for the Spring Semester. These cohorts include:

· Students enrolled in mandatory face-to-face classes
· Students dependent on the university for housing and dining, including international students, as well as students requiring specific academic accommodations or those participating in athletics
· First-year students and entering transfer students, enrolled in Fall 2020 and Spring 2021

Students who decline this invitation would join all other students who will continue to engage in remote learning from their homes or their off-campus residences.

Questions? Check out our one-stop guide of campus contacts: umass.edu/coronavirus/one-stop-guide-key-dates-and-campus-contacts

Have you met Sapir yet? She’s the new Israel Fellow on staff and has been really enjoying getting to know the UMass community so far! Sapir grew up in Kibbutz Amiad in the North of Israel and studied social work after her army service. A fun fact: her favorite Disney movie is Mulan (and she can sing the entire soundtrack in Hebrew!) If you haven’t gotten a chance to meet Sapir yet, you can email her at [email protected] or DM her on Instagram to set up a time to chat.

Sukkah-building: six feet apart edition!

Last Friday night, Sukkot began. It’s a holiday that involves spending time in temporary outdoor huts to remember the vulnerability of the Israelites wandering the wilderness.

Wherever you’re living, you can celebrate Sukkot by enjoying a little extra time outside. You might take a walk, do homework in a park, or just appreciate the leaves starting to change colors.

If you’re in the Amherst area, please come hang out in the sukkah outside Hillel anytime!

"We must never lose sight of the fact that Israeli-Palestinian peace is possible and it will be reached. It will be based on the end of the occupation, the establishment of a democratic Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza; a shared open capital in Jerusalem; economic cooperation; water sharing; mutual respect and recognition of the dignity and importance of both sides political, cultural, historic and religious heritage in this land; the removal of Israeli settlers in the West Bank and Gaza and the end of the suffering of the Palestinian refugees through return to the State of Palestine (for those who want it) with financial compensation and assistance for the resettlement, housing and employment generation for all Palestinian refugees.
